If you aren't too busy today, walk on down to 19th and Walnut and check out new Center City boutique, Zahra Saeed. The boutique is interesting because the pretty, Pakistani-born designer not just opened her own boutique, she designed all of the chic pieces neatly hanging on the silver racks. Think of the pieces as updated classics - fitted sheaths, pencil skirts, arm-bearing tops. (Actually, now that we think about it, it's very Michelle Obama). Last night the grand opening was packed with fashion insiders sipping wine. Marisa Guaglione-Stevens, president of Fashion Group International, as well as the classically well-dressed Julia Summers Morley. (Her hat last night was fierce, and yes, darling, you can wear color!) A happening event, happening times and happening clothes. Check it out! But leave the grey, matte jersey Elizabeth tank. You will know it by it's ruffled neck. It's mine! Any other new boutiques out there worth writing about?
Emo - short for emotional fashion - is a cross between goth and punk. It's for fashionistas who wear their hearts on their sleeves. The makeup is really heavy, almost Charlie Chaplin-like. The clothes are skin tight and black with a splash of color. Interesting, but not my look. High fashionwise: think of it as the bright colors of Betsey Johnson combined with black Yohji Yamamoto and MAC makeup. But we think Emo fashion should be done on the cheap. Go vintage, vintage, vintage. I'm going to let 14-year-old burgeoning fashionista Tweety Elitou tell you more about it. Thanks Tweety! Her latest webisode of Young, Hip aned Chic, shot at Showroom 77, is a really good Emo primer. And maybe I'll write a story about it. Any Emo fashionistas out there? Is it a big look in Philadelphia?
The second issue of the Philadelphia's I: The Art of Living in Style magazine is out today. We know the economy is tough, but it's OK to take some time out to dream. We are very proud of the second issue that features jumpsuits - everybody has got to have one this spring. Thank you to our cover model Alexandra Pungitore of Southwest Philadelphia and our inside model Charisse Adams, both of Philadelphia, We also have featured an amazing closet - Thank you Nancy Gansky of Fort Washington for giving fashionistas something to shoot for. Also, read about the coolest woman in accessories: Karen Giberson, president of the New York City based Accessories Council, who lives right her in Media. We also feature the latest in food, travel and the social scene. Whoda thunk? The good life is right here in Philadelphia. Let us know what you think.
On Saturday I finally saw the Oscar winning film Slum Dog Millionaire. I must say, it was better than I expected. The character development was smoking. The story line was intriguing. The costume design by Suttirat Anne Larlarb was chillingly accurate. But there was one detail in the costuming I noticed Saturday night. I thought it was extremely interesting that in the final scene of the movie of the year, Latika, played by Freida Pinto is wearing the Pantone Color of the Year, mimosa yellow.
"It's everywhere," said Leatrice Eiseman, color specialist and executive at the Seattle-based Pantone Color Institute. This shade, Eiseman said, is about warmth and sunlight, hope and optimism. It's about looking forward to a bright future.
Come to think of it, that is what the final scene of Millionaire is. Jamaal, played by Dev Patel, had beat insurmountable odds and now was looking toward a bright future with the woman he loves. I wonder if Larlab was thinking hope and optimism when she draped the goldeny/mustardy yellow scarf around Latika's head and shoulders. Was the choice of yellow simply paying homage to India's customs or was Larlab feeling the collective vibe of mimosa yellow?
I must admit I was surprised mimosa yellow was chosen color of the year. From looking at the trends, I thought this year's color would be kelly green, aqua blue or even flesh - be it brown, peach or something in between. What are yout thoughts on mimosa yellow? No doubt a Sunday morning mimosa makes me happy, but does the color ring optimism? What do you think? What's your color of the year?
