Q&A with designer Monica Botkier

The designer was at Delaware's Peter Kate boutique Thursday. Read our Q&A with her here.

Q&A with designer Monica Botkier

Monica Botkier of the Botkier bag is at Delaware boutique, Peter Kate this afternoon for a trunk show.

Botkier is one of the many featured designers at Peter Kate's "girls night out" event. She will sign bags for ladies looking for early holiday treats. The store also carries Nicole Miller, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch and Kate Spade. But Botkier will be the only designer at the party.

The festivities will run until 8 p.m. tonight. So hurry up and get to Peter Kate, located at 3830 Kennett Pike, Greenville DE (302) 656-7463

What a way to start your holiday shopping early!

Botkier is known for her simple yet luxe bags in moncohromatic tones. Her first bag was the Trigger satchel, known for it's roomy, deep pockets that a woman can just grab and go. Her bags retail for about $650 to $1,000. She's known for her "affordable" it bags.

We caught up with Botkier before she came to Philly for a little timely style Q&A.

EW: Tell me about your background?

MB:  I was a fashion photographer in NYC and fell in love with accessories. Having an art background and being obsessed with leather, with the skins I collected when making my portfolio books I decided to create my own handbags. It took off immediately when models and editors asked where they could get my bag!

EW:  What inspires you?

MB: Photography is a big inspiration for me, I collect photo and art books. I am also inspired by leather and jewelry especially vintage pieces. The women in NYC with their individual style always inspire.

EW:  What makes your bags so special?

MB:    Form and fashion meets function! Botkier bags are always chic with an edge but practical and wearable. We understand the modern woman is fabulous but busy. Botkier is the statement piece for everyday, day to night!

EW:  What makes the bigger statement, the dress or the accessory?

MB:    It's all in the details for me. The dress is obviously the focal point however it's the accessory that makes the statement about who you are. The finishing touch to the masterpiece that is you!

EW:   What’s the must have accessory for holiday?

MB:   Sparkle metallic (my personal favorite) and brights. I adore our Valentina party bag, it's a frame clutch that can be worn crossbody. Great gift, perfect to go out in and isn't seasonal even though it's perfect for the holidays.

EW:   What are you feeling for spring?

MB:  Spring and summer for me is all about fresh and new. We are introducing some slouchy chic silhouettes, convertibility and gorgeous unique metallic woven pieces. This is very exciting and new for us. Color is big, brights and pastels seem to be sticking around. Novelty leathers make great statements but can be worn as neutrals against all the prints in RTW.

About this blog

I’m a Libra so I’m all about pretty things. We of the scales sign know what we like, and our standards are high.

So I can’t help but love fashion – one day I will get that Diane von Furstenberg wrap and those Christian Louboutin shoes.

And fragrances? My favorite right now is Chanel Mademoiselle. As for makeup, can we say MAC?

So let’s thank the Greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, that a true fashionista can find everything she needs right here in Philly.

I’ve covered fashion here for six years, and I have traveled to New York, Los Angeles and Paris to write about local and national designers. Let me tell you, there is no place where people wear midnight Eagles green or Phillies red with such wild abandon as they do on the west side of the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Sound familiar? This blog is for you.
