Report ranks Philadelphia as one of the worst cities for Valentine’s Day

Philadelphia was recently ranked one of the top travel destinations in the country for 2016, but one study shows that folks may want to stay away for Valentine's Day.

Wallet Hub put Philly near the bottom of the list in their report on 2016's best and worst cities for couples celebrating this weekend's romantic holiday. The personal finance website ran the numbers to rank the United States' 100 largest cities according to their romantic qualities and affordability.

As the company notes on their website, the list was created using 15 metrics, including weather forecast, activities, and gift accessibility.

Philadelphia came in 95th overall. That's just ahead of Newark, NJ's ranking at 96, and way, way behind Pittsburgh's 10th place.

The City of Brotherly Love ranked poorly in several individual categories, including 46th for Valentine's Day Weather Forecast, 58th for Valentine's Day gift accessibility, 30th for Valentine's Day activities, and a dismal 96th for Valentine's Day budget.

That means that couples here in Philly could well find themselves parting with more cash for fewer options for Valentine's Day-centric businesses like florists and chocolate shops. Additionally, compared to other cities, Philly couples will be paying more for things like Valentine's Day dinner and movie passes.

One area where Philly didn't totally fail: Valentine's Day activities. The city ranked at number 30 in that area thanks to a dense list of restaurants, events, and local tourist attractions.

This continues Philadelphia's recent run of appearances on noteworthy listicles, though with a slightly less positive showing here. In 2015, Philly was included in lists including the Washington Post's "10 Bet Food Cities in America," Time's "9 Best Cities for Biking to Work," and JLL's list of cities with the fastest rising millennial populations.

But despite our low Valentine's Day ranking, however, we recently ran down a few good options for this Sunday's festivities — both Valentine's Day and the newly appointed "I Love Philly" Day.

And, as engagement and wedding ring company Ingle & Rhode found in a recent study, Philly is the 18th best city in the world for marriage proposals. So while we might not be great for canoodling, we're one of the best for committment — a fair trade-off when it comes to romance.
