Calendar: Legal advice for the unemployed

Filing for unemployment, fighting off foreclosure, preventing utility shutoffs, credit card issues, applying for expungement of criminal records, handling credit reports -- all these legal issues can and do come up for the unemployed. But what jobless person can afford a lawyer? So, set aside Monday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

So, set aside Monday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. when a lawyer from Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania will speak to the Barnabas Group, a church-based support group for the unemployed which meets weekly at the Calvary Fellowship Church in Downingtown.

The June 17 topic is "Marketing Yourself for New Employment."

Note: The group's website says that sessions begin with Bible study. Also,  the church's Monday Night prayer meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is open to participants. a pastor and prayer team members are available for individual prayer, as requested. Many people find unemployment a soul-destroying struggle -- and if you think prayer will help, it is available here.

Another church-based support group for the unemployed also takes place in Downingtown. St. Joseph's Church was the founding church for Joseph's People., now a network of about 10 churches in the western and northern Philadelphia suburbs. Here's the schedule. The Downingtown group meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

One more notice: My Career Transitions will meet tomorrow, Saturday, from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m at Penn State Great Valley's main building in Malvern. Admission is free, but you need to register and you can do so by clicking here. Deadline is today, Friday, at noon.

Saturday's topic is "Finding Work You Are Passionate About in Organizations That Share Your Values." The group meets the second Saturday of the month, except in August and December.

If you have a group that helps the unemployed, I will try to write about it in this blog. Because of time, I may not be able to write about every event, but I'll do my best. Please email me at jvonbergen@phillynews.com
