No wonder Eagles stink. So does Philadelphia's job scene

POSTED: Monday, February 4, 2013, 12:28 PM

No wonder the Eagles never make it to the Super Bowl. Philadelphia's job record stinks, even worse than the team.

RiseSmart, an outplacement technology company in California, posits that the results of the Super Bowl game can readily be predicted by looking at the jobless rates of the two competing cities. The one with the lowest rate usually wins the Bowl. It's been that way 21 out of  26 contests.

"Could it be a coincidence?  Of course – but it is certainly an interesting correlation," wrote Sanjay Sathe, CEO of RiseSmart.  "Who's to say that a city's economic prosperity, as measured by jobless rates, doesn't have at least some effect on fan support, team morale and other factors that could influence the game’s outcome?"

Let's look at the numbers: The Baltimore metropolitan area, home of the victorious Ravens, had an unemployment rate of 7 percent in December. San Francisco: 7.3 in December.

Philadelphia's rate was a staggering 8.4 percent in December -- this is for the entire metropolitan area.

Doesn't look like fired coach Andy Reid needed much outplacement help. The Kansas City Chiefs snatched him up. If Sathe's theory is correct, Reid should be super successful there. In December, the Kansas City metro area had an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, lower than the Ravens.

"We all enjoyed Super Bowl Sunday, but now it's Monday – and there are far too many people who don't have jobs to go to," Sathe said.

(Note: In an earlier version, I said the company was in Texas: It's not. That's an address for some of its corporate business, so I corrected it.)

U Tea Party dullbulbs need to learn how to read.

The jobless rate is clearly identified as, "...this is for the entire metropolitan area." That means the New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania counties surrounding the city. That's a population of 6,000,000, of which the city is about 25%.

If you can't comprehend what you read, you really shouldn't post a comment.

However, those are all "blue" states so yes, they get what they voted for.

Maryland and California are also blue states, so what's your point?

And, in case you didn't know, Baltimore is in Maryland and San Francisco is in California.

This article exemplifies why readership keeps falling with Philly newspapers. Nothing meaningful, correlation is worthless, and delivers no value for me as a reader. More time should be spent researching companies and providing meaningful news and insightful analysis.

perhaps this study shows more than anything that unemployment rate is a bad metric for measuring the economy as a whole. pretty obvious that the economy in San Francisco is much much better than that of Baltimore, despite the unemployment rates. Baltimore is one of the poorest cities in the country, San Fran is one of the wealthiest.

Let's start with "No wonder the Eagles never make it to the Super Bowl". If this brilliant Temple grad knew what the word "never" means, she wouldn't use it in the first sentence. Last time I checked the Eags have been to the Super Bowl. Sad state of affairs at the Inquirer.

I ate oatmeal every day for breakfast the past month and it was sunny 21 of the 30 days. If I eat oatmeal, there are good chances it will be sunny. Sadly there are a lot of Americans who use this kind of rationale and understand almost nothing about even the most basic statistics.

    Sasquatch,

If you're going to insult someone by telling them to use THEIR Obamaphone, you should understand basic grammar first.
