The biggest difficulty I see with job hunting now, is that it's mostly 'blind' addresses on the internet. If you do get a phone number, it's an answering machine. Many newspapers hardly have any classified sections or went out-of-business. Those that shunt you into Yahoojobs etc. are a complete waste of time. Craig's list has become full of scams and also has many out-of-date ads. So, it's very hard to figure where to even LOOK for a job, or an apartment these days. Anyone who depends on the library for the internet, will find their time way too limited. I tried to go in person, to hand my resumes to HR offices at institutions I was familiar with and was told, they do not even accept paper resumes, snail mail or even faxed resumes. Strictly internet. Of course, it's a way of getting rid of too many applicants, but the internet also invites many inappropriate people to respond to a job, making the mess worse. And I think someone ought to mention the miles of red tape one goes through such as background checks, fingerprints, credit checks, child abuse checks, elder abuse checks, driving record, drug screens--so many hoops to leap through before you even get to the problem of whether or not you're a suitable candidate. Is it any wonder the economy has had a nervous breakdown? We are hogtied in red tape, with employers hiding in bunkers, afraid of the people they are hiring.

Roxana, It is ridiculous. I love the line about "employers hiding in bunkers afraid of the people they are hiring." It does give credence to the idea of networking to bypass the whole mess.
