Listen: The War On Drugs return with "'Thinking Of A Place' for Record Store Day

Tomorrow is Record Store Day, and The War On Drugs have something in store.

The Philadelphia band led by Adam Granduciel - who is now living in Los Angeles, actually - have not been heard from since Lost In The Dream, the 2014 album that pretty much swept critic's polls that year and turned the band into a featured festival attraction capable of filling Radio City Music Hall as headliners.

Now, the band is set to for re-entry with its first new music in three years. The song "Thinking Of A Place," is coming out tomorrow as a limited edition vinyl release exclusively for Record Store Day. It's the band's first release since moving up in the world and signing with Atlantic Records in 2015.

With Granduciel credited on lead vocals and nine other instruments, it's a full band recording that also features back up vocals by Louise Canard and Paloma Gil, the French women turned Philadelphians known as The Dove & The Wolf.

Between five minutes on Side A and six more on Side B, that turns it all the way up to 11 minutes of a new War On Drugs song that very much sounds like a War on Drugs song. (Though it might not if, like me, you first put the 12 inch record on your turntable at 33 rpm rather than the proper 45.)  With Granduciel's Dylanish vocal and long, languid guitar lines (including pedal steel played by Max Hart), it casts an evocative, mesmerizing spell, likely to leave you thinking of a place that resonates in your own personal dream life.  It's a pretty piece of music that bodes extremely well for whatever is coming next from the band in 2017.

There are 17 stores in Philadelphia alone participating in Record Store Day, running alphabetically from Beautiful World Syndicate South to Wooden Shoe Books and Records. They include Hideaway Music in Chestnut Hill, Long In The Tooth on Sansom Street at Main Street Music in Manayunk, where there's an impressive five band bill starting at 1 p.m.  with Danny Black from Good Old War and including Ron Gallo and Tommy Keene and Ivan Julian.

Will all of those shops, or the many others throughout the region, have the WOD vinyl for sale on Saturday? Not likely. Best to check ahead. A full list of participating stores can be found on the Record Store Day website right here.
