The Philly Jazz Fest, Saturday at the Sheraton

The inaugural Philly Jazz Fest happens at the Sheraton Downtown Hotel Ballroom on Saturday, with a long list of local stalwarts including Denise King, Bootsie Barnes, Pieces of a Dream, Jeannie Brooks, Duane Eubanks and Frank Bey.

The through-line concept of the one-day Jazz Fest, which hopes to become a three day event in the future,  is "Remembering Grover" in honor of late Philadelphia sax man Grover Washington. At 7 p.m., King, who's pictured, plays with a band behind her that includes Aaron Graves on Keys, Barnes on sax, Eubanks on trumpet, Lee Smith on bass and Bruce Cox on drums.

The downtown Sheraton is a 17th and Race. The fest is presented by the former producers of the Cape May Jazz Fest. Schedule and ticket info are here.  Check out King singing Dinah Washington below.
