Refugee All-Stars at the WCL

The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars are downstairs at the World Cafe Live tonight. As uplifting pop music stories born of incrediible real life hardship go, the Refugee All-Stars' saga is hard to top. The West African band members met in a Guinea refugee camp where they had fled, separately from Sierra Leona's Civil War. The band were the subjects of a 2006 documentary, and their reggae-flavored second album, just out, was recorded partly in Africa and partly in New Orleans, with the help of suddenly everywhere Crescent City horn man Trombone Shorty and Abington native and long standing member of Los Lobos Steve Berlin. Los Lobos. A Rise & Shine preview is below.
