Pitchfork's Top 500

The shocking reality is that the decade that never got a proper name - the 00's, or the aughts, or the 2000's - is all but over. This troubling fact is underscored by the publication of The Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s by canonical online indie music magazine Pitchfork. The Big Pink's "Velvet" comes in 500th. OutKast's uncannily prescient "B.O.B.," a.k.a. "Bombs Over Baghdad," which came out at the dawn of the decade in 2000, comes in first. Like Andre 3000 and Big Boi say, "Don't pull the thang out, unless you plan to bang!" (In other OutKast news, the ever popular "Hey Ya!" is at #12.) Locally, Philadelphia DJ-producer Diplo makes the Top Ten with his remix of his own production of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," which finished in the third spot, one better than Beyonce and just behind LCD Soundsystem. The Top 20 is here. Have a look and congratulate yourself on how much of a hipster you are, or get angry because you haven't even heard of half of the artists. All 500 tracks are streaming on the Pitchfork site.
