I caught most of the three part Memphis rock, blues and soul caravan that rolled into the Starlight Ballroom on Friday night, though I must admit I was absolutely dead on my feet in a post-Pedro-being-unnecessarily-being-pulled Phillies depression and couldn't hang for all of Lucero's raucous, horny headlining set. That's a cell phone shot of Amy LeVere above, slapping her upright bass while fronting her rootsabilly power trio and singing about a man who done her wrong in "Washing Machine." LaVere, who played rockabilly hellcat Wanda Jackson in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, was excellent as always, and was sandwiched betweened Lucero, the punk-country outfit fronted by throaty singer Brian Nichols, who've souled up their sound on the new 1372 Overton Park, and openers Lightnin' Burnside. That's the raw Hill Country blues duo of guitarist Lightnin' Malcolm and drummer Cedric Burnside, son of the late great R.L. Burnside. Unvarnished to say the least, and immersed in a unmistakable rich and redolent Southern funk, the interracial blues crew (who werre joined by Lucero bassist John C. Stubblefield on one song) were the best thing to happen to me all day. Check out ther 2 Man Wrecking Crew here, and on R.L's "Goin' Down South," below.
