Concert Pick: Heyward Howkins at Johnny Brenda's

Indie-folk songwriter celebrates release of 'Be Frank, Furness' in Fishtown.

Concert Pick: Heyward Howkins at Johnny Brenda's

Heyward Howkins.
Heyward Howkins.

The award for punniest Philadelphia-centric album title of the year goes to Heyward Howkins' Be Frank, Furness, which plays on the name of the Victorian architect responsible for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Fisher Fine Arts Library on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, where Howkins is pictured on the album cover.

The second full length by former Trouble with Sweeney guitarist and Silver Ages singer steps up its indie-folk game with intriguing story songs like “Sweet Tea Oleander” and “Brite Kites” (with lyrics taken from a poem written by Howkins’ mother) sung in a keening voice that takes its time growing on you.

Tonight, Howkins celebrates Be Frank, Furness' release at Johnny Brenda's, with Needle Points and Sad Actor also on the bill. $10 tickets are here. A clip of Howkins doing the title track is below.
