Chinatown Desert Blues

Tinariwen Video: Tinariwen

"Welcome to the desert," Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni of Tinariwen said at the Troc on Wednesday. They way he pronounced it, it sounded like "welcome to the dessert," as if it were time for rice pudding, or maybe just a taste of something sweet after the the fulfilling repast of the Tuareg blues band's first few songs. But you knew what the straight-out-of-the-Sahara guitar player meant: this music was about to transport you from Chinatown to rebel fighters' arid African homeland. And so it did. My review of the show from Friday's Inquirer is here, and a sorry-it's-so-shakey iPhone clip from the six piece beautifully-turbaned band's performance is below.
