Chanson Singer

Globally thinking New Mexican music gypsy Zach Condon, leader of Beirut, plays the Electric Factory Friday night. The 23 year old chanson singer first built his buzz with 2006's Balkanized Gulag Orkestar, then got Frenchified with 2007's Flying Club Cup. The trumpet and ukelele and accordion playing wunderkind is back this year with the double EP,  March of the Zapotec/Holland. The winning first half was recorded with a 17 piece Oaxacan funeral band, the spotty second is a one-man electronic band recording made in Condon's Brooklyn apartment. The indie-romantic explains himself to Steve Klinge here. Below, the video for "Nantes," from Flying Club Cup, and underneath that, "Mimizan," the Beirut contribution to the Dark Was The Night AIDs benefit compilation.
