Beer and Tomato Pie and Rock and Roll: Roman Candle at Main Street Music

All three of the above will be available for free at Main Street Music in Manayunk on Sunday afternoon when the North Carolina quintet Roman Candle come in for a gratis in-store performance. The Skip Matheny-fronted quintet played the North Star Bar on Friday night - that's where the picture comes from, with Matheny's wife Timshel on keyboard on the far left _ and after heading out to Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. to play a gig with Iron & Wine last night, today the Chapel Hill, N.C. band comes back to Philadelphia, where, Matheny said, they sell more records than in any other city. We've got good taste, apparently: Oh Tall Tree In The Ear, the band's sophomore release, is a particularly strong, exceedingly smart rootsy pop-rock affair that references Neil Young and Paradise Lost without seeming the least bit pretentious, and the excellently named crew delivered songs like the sarcastic "Why Modern Radio Is A-OK," with vigor at the North Star. On Sunday, the music starts at 2.
