Etta Doing Better

Terminally ill soul-blues-rock and roll singer Etta James, stricken with leukemia and dementia and reported to be on death's door in mid-December, has been taken off a respirator and is doing better, her manager Lupe De Leon told the Associated Press.

Here's a clip of James wishing you a Happy New Year, 1983, performing with the Grateful Dead and the Tower of Power horns at  the Oakland Coliseum. The song is Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle," and according to Deadhead commenters on YouTube, James had to fend off the attentions of a fawning Bob Weir backstage, which she did by repeatedly saying "somebody get this white boy away from me!"

Thanks to David Ulin for this. Happy 2012, Ms. James.
