Sixteen scouts were at the Wachovia Center to watch Ottawa outlast the fading Flyers, 2-0, on Thursday night.

That's a stunningly high number of scouts, and, with Flyers starting goalie Ray Emery sidelined for at least six weeks, speculation is running rampant that the club is interested in a goaltender.

But the fact is, Brian Boucher _ who had another strong performance Thursday _ is good enough to carry the load until Emery returns.

It says here the Flyers need to add a sniper or two, because right now, this offense just isn't producing.

On Thursday, they were shut out for the third time in six games, and their power play was 0 for 7. It marked the second time since 1968 that they were blanked three times in six games or fewer.

Virtually the entire team has gone into a slump at the same time. The so-called stars, like Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, have been alarmingly inconsistent. That would be expected from young players like Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk, but not proven guys like Carter and Richards.

Van Riemsdyk, by the way, has hit the proverbial wall. He is goal-less in his last 11 games and would be better-suited playing on the third line.

But because of injuries, he is playing with Carter and Danny Briere.

Yes, the Flyers dearly miss injured left winger Simon Gagne, who could return next week and push van Riemsdyk down to the third line.

Dan Carcillo has one more game to serve on his suspension before returning, and injured forwards Darroll Powe and Blair Betts could be back in about two weeks.

Even when they do return, the Flyers need to add another offensive piece. Losing Mike Knuble and Joffrey Lupul  has hurt more than they expected. Compounding matters was the loss of Gagne (hernia, abdominal surgery). Those three players combined for 86 goals last season.

At the very least, the Flyers should promote right winger Stefan Legein (7 goals in 17 games) from the AHL Phantoms. Maybe he'll get hot and prove he belongs. Hey, he can't do any worse than the other AHL callups. It's worth a shot.

In the meantime, teams are circling around GM Paul Holmgren and trying to get a steal. According to the Delco Times, Tampa Bay offered mediocre goalie Mike Smith for Giroux or van Riemsdyk, two players whom the Flyers feel will be future stars.

Thanks, but no thanks, the Flyers said. (We doubt if Holmgren kept a straight face.)

Maybe Holmgren can turn the talks toward 22-year-old Anaheim right winger Bobby Ryan, the pride of Cherry Hill. Would you deal the soon-to-be-25-year-old Carter for Ryan and, say, a No. 1 pick?

    Just wondering.

The Flyers would gain more than $3 million in cap space _ paving the way for another trade involving a veteran scorer at wing  _ and they could put Briere and Giroux as the second- and third-line centers.

Though it would be a tight fit, Anaheim has enough cap space to add Carter.

Yes! I would trade Carter for Ryan straight up. A draft pick would be a bonus. Carter may have gifted hands but he is not a leader. He is not consistent. He is not going to finish his checks. He is not going to bang people and create his own space on the ice. Carter = Joe Thornton. Size and talent but no heart.

Mike Smith better than any goalie since Hextall? HA! Maybe you can share some of the drugs your on so I can spit that unintelligent rhetoric for a few days... Mike Smith will never be a #1 Goalie and enjoy Nitty playing well without any pressure to win...maybe, just maybe you guys in Tampa will finish in 10th place this year

Bobby Ryan AND a #1? That would be hard to pass up

I hope that Homer laughed at Tampa for offering Smith for Giroux or Van Riemsdyk. Smith will be out of the league in another three years. We're better off sticking with Boucher until Razor can come back.

Carter's value isn't quite as high as it should be right now, to say the least. Ryan was a higher draft pick, is younger, and his cap hit is significantly lower than Carter's. He's also just starting to come into his own. I can't imagine Anaheim would give up a first round pick with him, if they even did the trade straight up. I think the first name on the chopping block is going to be Coburn. Even though he's struggling, teams will still see his potential and realize that all they need to do is to get him to play with a physical edge again to be effective. We've got plenty of depth at D and we'd probably be better off not having to dole out a raise to him next season. @stpetepaul -- Enjoy Niitty for now. The Flyers only got rid of him because of his frequent injuries. Carchidi only called Smith mediocre to accentuate how absurd it is to think you guys might get a future superstar like Giroux or JvR for him. It'd be like suggesting the Flyers would offer Emery for Hedman.

There aren't many practical trades out there for this team. Giroux and JVR are going nowhere. Richards too. No one is going to take Briere, Gagne or Hartnell and their bloated contracts. Carter has to go. He plays with zero heart. Just happy being in the NHL, doesn't care about WINNING in the NHL. Remember when Richards went down last year, how Carter carried this team?? He was unstoppable. What happened to that? I would deal Carter, Carcillo and Syvret to Anaheim for Ryan and Giguere. Let Carter whoop it up in So. Cal. with Lupul. We need winners here, not playboys.

Richards and Carter are stars? To be a star you have to produce. Neither seem to be willing or able to win a key face-off which is a part of the teams problems. For some reason Crybaby Crosby actually practices faceoff and has gotten pretty good at them. Why don't our "stars"? Both Richie and Carts are very good players but one thing the Flyers haven't had since #88 is a genuine superstar that can change a game on any given shift. Pitt has Malkin(not Crosby), Washington has OV, Detroit has Zetterberg and Datsyuk. These are players that teams game plan around and the Flyers have rarely had that in their 42 year history. Maybe it's time to do what Pittsburgh has done so many times in their history...put a terrible team on the ice so we can get multiple high draft picks in multiple years(see Fleury, Malkin, Crosby, Staal in four straight years).

I would trade Carter for Ryan and #1 in a heartbeat. That would enable Giroux to move to the 2nd line center position and give the Flyers help on the wing which they need. As it is, the team already has several centers playing out of position on the wing

Anaheim will not trade Ryan for Carter, get real. Terrible idea. No one wanted Briere, Gagne, or Hartnell in the off season. That means the scouts want JVR, Giroux, Richards or Carter. Period. Rest of the team is dead weight and none of the Phantoms are showing any promise.

I'm worried that Holmgren is going to get desperate and trade one of our young studs for nothing. Don't trade Giroux or van Riemsdyk. If we have to trade anyone trade Carter, he has no heart anyways. As far as I am concerned, Richards and Carter are to blame for this lack of scoring. Carter isn't man enough to live up to expectations.
