With late theatrics, Flyers bail out Bryz
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
WINNIPEG _ Earlier this season in a game against Winnipeg, the Flyers set a dubious franchise record: most goals scored in a loss - eight.
On Tuesday night, they seemed destined to set another unwanted mark - most shots on goal in a road loss.
But in the closing seconds of regulation and the final minute of overtime, they scored on-the-doorstep goals, producing a had-to-see-it-to-believe-it 5-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets at the ear-splitting MTS Centre.
“We were just resilient tonight,” said winger Wayne Simmonds, who tied the game by tapping in a James van Riemsdyk feed with 9.7 seconds left in regulation.
If the Jets had held on for 10 more seconds, they would have jumped from ninth to third in the Eastern Conference, and the Flyers would have slid to sixth.
Jagr converted a Danny Briere pass with 43.1 seconds remaining in overtime, preventing a dreaded shootout, where the Flyers are 1-5 this season and 20-39 in their career. (Jagr scored in his first game in Winnipeg since 1996, when he also had the game-winner in a 1-0 Penguins victory.)
Given the shaky play of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and the acrobatics of Winnipeg goalie Ondrej Pavelec, not many would have liked the Flyers’ chances if it had gone into OT.
But the Flyers’ relentless attack - they equaled a franchise road record with 55 shots - produced a dramatic, memorable ending, one that should give them momentum for the four-game road trip.
Bryzgalov said his teammates bailed him out after he allowed a weak goal early in the third period.
“I think we win because the team deserved to win,” Bryzgalov said. “They play unbelievable and create so many great, great chances to score. I think it’s a fair result.”

Are you kidding me Carchidi, bailing out Bryz? Did you watch the game? 3 of the goals came on the penalty kill, which is a continuing sign of our pk's huge troubles. To add to that 2 of the goals were scored on him because once again our dmen are letting the other teams forwards just set up in front of the net.
You should really take a tutorial class on the game of hockey before you comment on games again, because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about and are just trying to pander to the fans that hate on bryz because they also don't understand that the d is struggling. phillyfan27- are you kidding? are you saying that bryz has been good this year? are you not watching the incredibly soft goals he lets in night after night? the goal last night that went through his glove and over his head?? that is unacceptable. he sucks.
- He's not saying Bryz didn't let in a soft goal. We all saw that. He's saying Bryz didn't let in FOUR soft goals, and at some point the D & skaters need to be held accountable too. Clear up some of those defensive breakdowns and now it's a 4-2 or 4-1 game. And then you can rightfully rip Bryz a new one all you want for not getting the shut-out on that one weak - and it was weak - missed glove save).
toph314 - but he lets in soft goals EVERY GAME. of course every goal isn't his fault. i haven't seen anyone say that. but can't he go 1 game without a soft goal? how about 2 games in a row? is that too much to ask for a goalie who is supposed to be in the top 10 in the league? most games are won or lost by a goal, or we lose them in the shootout. it's costing us valuable points and it deflates a team when they are playing well. enough already. stop making excuses for him. he's been terrible. period.
- Sooo that long unscreened wrister from the point is the d fault as well.
fishtownfritz - phillyfan27: Yo, bro. Bryz sucks. Tell me about those two shorthanded goals he gave up against the Pens. He didn't even try to stop them, I think he likes to hear the sound of the puck whistling past his ear. Which of these do you like best?
1. I was screened
2. It was deflected
3. There's a soccer net behind me (shootouts: 2 for 11 )
4. It was sucked into the net by a vacuum cleaner ( Gaborik's backbreaker with 5 seconds left)
Um...Phillyfan27 did you watch the game? The 4th goal was a disgrace. A 7 year old could have stopped that. The 1st goal was on the PP yes, but it was a shot from the point with no screen. I agree the PK has been weak but you are getting paid $51 million, you HAVE TO make a few saves once and a while. Bottom line is the Flyers did bail Bryz out last night. ragecage22- And there is the real point: no one pays $51 mil for a $750k performance. He wanted it, he needs to live up to it. Period. And guys like Pavalec don't make those excuses. They just stop the puck. icarus
Do they not count shots in OT? The tying goal was the 55th shot, they had to have at least a half dozen more in the 4+ minutes of overtime. potus- You've got it wrong. They had 49 SOG through regulation, six in OT. That's what the box score indicates. I wasn't counting at home, but I remember JJ distinctly noting that "their next shot will be their 55th" just before the offensive zone faceoff that led to Briere's monster work at the side of the net and Jagr's goal.

Phillyfan, please stop taking whatever meds you are on. Immediately. Bryz again let in a weak goal at a critical time. The Flyers totally bailed him out. How can you not see this? Is your real last name "Bryzgalov"? Vituperator
The least he couldv'e done was to not duck on that last goal. What a disgrace !! Ticketpete
Phillyfan- it was a wrist shot from the circle that he missed...what game were you watching? One bad goal in a playoff game and you lose. Period. michaeldhockeyguy
That one shot was coming right at his head, if he didn't duck it would have hit him and not scored. What do you want him to do? get hit by the puck? neddyflanders- have to assume you're kidding with this question. hard to gauge sarcasm on the board. but just in case you're not, 1) he should have caught it with his glove and 2) yes, he should let it hit his head. this is hockey. he's a goalie. stop the puck.
