Will Jagr, Carle return?

POSTED: Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 2:44 AM

Now that their season is over, where do the Flyers go from here?

Well, one of the first things on general manager Paul Holmgren’s agenda is trying to resign defenseman Matt Carle ($3.4 million cap hit this year) and right winger Jaromir Jagr ($3.3 million), a pair of potential unrestricted free agents. The Flyers would like to sign both players, a source said.

The Flyers have $61.2 million committed to next year. If Chris Pronger is on the long-term injured reserve list again next season, the Flyers will get $4.9 million of cap relief.

That would mean they would have about $56.2 million committed to 2012-13 salaries. The current cap is $64.3 million, but it is expected to rise to around $69 million.

So the Flyers would have about $13 million of cap room, and that number will drop when they sign restricted free agents Jakub Voracek and Marc-Andre Bourdon.

They could free more room by dealing winger James van Riemsdyk ($4.25 million), and, remember, Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter, a potential UFA who figures to get a big raise from his $3.5 million salary, is on the Flyers’ radar.

The 40-year-old Jagr, who scored just one goal in 11 playoff games _ none against the Devils _  said he didn’t know what would happen in the off-season.

“I have to say, thanks for the support from the fans,” he said. “I love everyone on this team. That was probably the most enjoyable year I’ve ever had. I’ve won some Cups, I’ve won some trophies, but I loved this year. From the organization to the last player on the team, and the fans, they were so nice to me.

“I hate to finish it right now; that’s the worst feeling. You finish the whole story, the whole year, that’s a sad day today for me…I wanna cry right now.”

Breakaways. Claude Giroux said overconfidence played a role in the series loss the Devils. “I think we thought we were going to walk over New Jersey,” he said…..In the last two games, the Flyers had a total of 34 giveaways while the Devils had 11…..It marked just the 11th time (out of 96 playoff series) that the Flyers had lost four straight in the post-season.

Exit Carle and salary. JVR to Leafs for big strong RIGHT-HAND shot Luke Schenn. Love JJagr at $2.75M, otherwise, gone.

Agree with Carle exit. I would keep JVR due to his speed and size. If you want a Right-Hand shooter on "D" go all out for Weber. He is a beast, shoots right and has a pretty good mean streak in him -- I Like!! Go Flyers!!!

aside from reading a few rumours this season, why exactly would you want Luke Schenn? He was regularly a healthy scratch for the Toronto Maple Leafs (and if you check the standings you will see, that isn't that good). There is already one too many Schenns on this Flyers team that doesn't know how to defend.

Jagr at 2.5 at most or walk. CArle...not a chance. They have money and assets to acquire 1 or 2 d-men. They need a defensive forward!!!

I have had my fill of Matt Carle. His defensive deficiencies do not merit him coming back. He was a turnover machine once again in this series, his positioning is consistently poor and he is not a shot blocker either. Go back to game 4, the first goal was his man, and he was not in position to defend as usual. He does not bring enough offensively to offset his poor play in his own end. While he is a good skater, and an above average passer, he has no shot from the point and just to me is not worthy of a long term deal. They need someone who can play minutes but be much more positionally sound in their own end.

I think they should take time and re-evaluate if they haven't already. Jagr is useful at that salary and contract length. They shouldn't over-react to the loss in the Semis. The reason they went out had more to do with being out-coached and out-scouted than anything else. Have to hand it to Jersey.

“We have a team right now that, in my opinion, is not playing with the kind of confidence it needs. We probably have a handful of players who are playing to our expectations. That leaves a lot of players who have more to give.”

"It's really not about the last four or five games. It's about changing to get the chemistry back on our team, to get the confidence back on our team and make what I would say (are) minor adjustments in a system that really worked in the (past). But teams have adjusted to it, and our team hasn't adjusted over the last couple of years." A quote about Peter Laviolette. Paul Holmgren? No, but could be. By Jim Rutherford, the GM who fired him in Carolina.

The funny thing about this post...is that it technically says the exact opposite thing as it's intention.

    resign: to relinquish

    re-sign: to sign again.

Technically, you are asking Matt Carle to NOT leave. I agree with that, but I assume you are asking for otherwise.

sign MAB, and jake. Go after suter and let carle walk. move one of our 4-5 mil guys, JVR i would like to keep, if for anything because his value is low. Kimmo, Coburn, mez, grossman, Gus, MAB, Lija and a suter would be a plus for D. If the new CBA allows a contract to be dropped, let bryz go.

Carle is top 5 in league turnovers this playoffs. Flyers will look to improve defensively and it starts with NOT resigning this guy. Plus some sucker out there will give him a contract north of $3mil, no thanks.

Let Carle and Jagr walk. Use the money to sign Shea Webber. DONE and DONE.

if you let both those players walk you have $3million in cap space and even if you have the $4.9 million if Pronger goes on LTIR you'd still have to give up approximately 4-5 first round draft picks to get Weber who is a restricted free agent.

For the love of Christ man, DO NOT RE-SIGN Matt Carle. He isn't even average anymore. He is the Kerry Huffman of this team.

I agree mold ... Jagr looked very tired at the end of the regular season and didn't do much in the playoffs. Shedding Carle and Jagr to get Webber or Suter would be HUGE for this team. I still think JVR should stay on the roster, but if they could trade him and free up some money for Zach Parise I'd do that in a second.
