Will Jagr, Carle return?
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Now that their season is over, where do the Flyers go from here?
Well, one of the first things on general manager Paul Holmgren’s agenda is trying to resign defenseman Matt Carle ($3.4 million cap hit this year) and right winger Jaromir Jagr ($3.3 million), a pair of potential unrestricted free agents. The Flyers would like to sign both players, a source said.
The Flyers have $61.2 million committed to next year. If Chris Pronger is on the long-term injured reserve list again next season, the Flyers will get $4.9 million of cap relief.
That would mean they would have about $56.2 million committed to 2012-13 salaries. The current cap is $64.3 million, but it is expected to rise to around $69 million.
So the Flyers would have about $13 million of cap room, and that number will drop when they sign restricted free agents Jakub Voracek and Marc-Andre Bourdon.
They could free more room by dealing winger James van Riemsdyk ($4.25 million), and, remember, Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter, a potential UFA who figures to get a big raise from his $3.5 million salary, is on the Flyers’ radar.
The 40-year-old Jagr, who scored just one goal in 11 playoff games _ none against the Devils _ said he didn’t know what would happen in the off-season.
“I have to say, thanks for the support from the fans,” he said. “I love everyone on this team. That was probably the most enjoyable year I’ve ever had. I’ve won some Cups, I’ve won some trophies, but I loved this year. From the organization to the last player on the team, and the fans, they were so nice to me.
“I hate to finish it right now; that’s the worst feeling. You finish the whole story, the whole year, that’s a sad day today for me…I wanna cry right now.”
Breakaways. Claude Giroux said overconfidence played a role in the series loss the Devils. “I think we thought we were going to walk over New Jersey,” he said…..In the last two games, the Flyers had a total of 34 giveaways while the Devils had 11…..It marked just the 11th time (out of 96 playoff series) that the Flyers had lost four straight in the post-season.

Carle being gone after this season is the only solace I can take always from these playoffs. WHY DO THE FLYERS BELIEVE IN HIM? His plus minus must be thru the floor, he appears slow, weak and way too often turns the puck over. He and the rest of our defense need to go. yourdaddy!
Sign Suter at any cost. NYFlyersFan
The Richards deal for Simmer/Schenn looks bad right now but the future might be different if both those guys mature.I would let Carle walk, same with Jagr, free up 7 million and go after Suter. JVR is a one trick pony, he has no shot, no sense of urgency in his game, and he was falt ou terrible this eries. hurt or not, we have seen JVR's potential and it is limited.
As for out head coach, let be honest, he got outcoached badly in this series! Fabulous- Why is the Richards trade bad again? We got better this season and we are setup to be good for many more seasons. Richards and the Kings were dead in the water until Carter got there and could be with his boys, Richie and Willy. The kings will win the cup this year. They are playing with more fire than any team, and they have a good D and a great goalie. Book it!
But, I would let Carle go.....see yah. Go fool another team into thinking you are a defenseman. Good riddance. kozykoz26 - how exactly did the Flyers get better this year? Was it the worse regular season, or the exact same playoff finish? Last year they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champions...this year...well, lets see how far New Jersey gets. Hexy4GM
Holmgren will do the wrong thing either way....too mnay blows to the head. phillybasher
I think they were a little bit out-worked by Jersey, but the difference was that the Flyers' coaches and advance scouts couldn't match their counterparts. They were out-coached. Go home and figure it out, boys. I wouldn't change much about the lineup. They're deep, young, and rather talented. The outcome of this series is a great example of how a well-devised system employed as designed will always win out. Best not to go overboard wanting too much change and just tip your hat to the Devils.
Some of you guys are confusing. It's one 'b' not two in Weber's surname. I don't care about grammar and spelling, but it suggests you don't really know all that much about a guy you're pining for the team to sign. He makes $7.5M and is an RFA. Nashville has over $12M in cap space right now, and the cap is expected to jump quite a bit. It's highly unlikely Weber goes anywhere else, and I'll be mildly shocked if Suter isn't re-signed. They're a competitive team with cap space.
As for the Richards trade being described as "bad" or the comment that Homer will make dumb moves because he's been "hit on the head" too many times, you guys can quit pretending that you're Flyer fans and reveal yourselves. In the context of what occurred in the past year, they're both ridiculous comments. sklandog
I am with everyone who said no to Carle. Give aways machine is what he is. Top 20 in giveaways year after year. Nitroglycerin
I suspect the defense will be overhauled. Expect at least one major free agent defenseman signing. I would let Carle walk: the negatives outweigh the positives. Liija, of course, is gone, likely out of the league. He was really bad. Kubina is gone. Bourdon looks like a keeper for the third pair. I think Kimmo will rest up and come back for a final season. Meszaros will be healthy again -- he would have made a big difference against the Debs. Even in his first game back last night you could see that. Gustafsson looked panicky and frail in the playoffs...not sure about him. eagle1971
Number one Replace Lavi,Number two No!defense man lighter that 225lbs./6'3".Stay with North American players, start looking for a new goalie, must have a physcological exam in advance of signing,NO MORE NUT CASES!!!! quigly46
No thanks to Jagr for sure, he looked very slow in the playoffs and couldnt do much. CBA is up after the season so dont assume cap will go up it could go down significantly actually. If there is an amnesty clause in the new CBA hopefully the Flyers will pay off Bryz but thats a lot of money to pay for one season. It could be me but these other goalies in the playoffs are much better than Bryz but they are also BIGGER in size. I looke at Smith, and quick and Henrik and they both take up a lot of net. shanehockey28- When is the last time a salary went down? Come one dude. The cap is going up. The difference between the goalies is that the guys left do not let in soft goals. They get in good position and let the puck hit them. For some reason Bryz feels he must go down on every shot. That is why teams shoot high on him.

Everyone loves big physical D, but the Flyers lost this series because they lack the necessary speed on the back end. They have enough size in Coburn & Grossman (maybe Pronger). Gotta develop some speedy puck moving D-men to break the trap. Plus, it would be nice if they could show a different look on the PP breakout than give the puck to Voracek and hope for the best. sbg42
Don't sell low on JVR. The Flyers never seem to sell high on anybody. If someone wants to give value for JVR, fine, but don't flip him for a 5th D-Man. willthethrill11
I do not like resigning wither of these players, Carle is not a strong defenseman in his own end, sometehing that the Flyers need to get better at, and Jagr looked his age in the playoffs, he looked slow and did not really make a difference against a tight checking NJ team. I say there is much better value out there they can use that money to get. jdeang
