Will Jagr, Carle return?
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Now that their season is over, where do the Flyers go from here?
Well, one of the first things on general manager Paul Holmgren’s agenda is trying to resign defenseman Matt Carle ($3.4 million cap hit this year) and right winger Jaromir Jagr ($3.3 million), a pair of potential unrestricted free agents. The Flyers would like to sign both players, a source said.
The Flyers have $61.2 million committed to next year. If Chris Pronger is on the long-term injured reserve list again next season, the Flyers will get $4.9 million of cap relief.
That would mean they would have about $56.2 million committed to 2012-13 salaries. The current cap is $64.3 million, but it is expected to rise to around $69 million.
So the Flyers would have about $13 million of cap room, and that number will drop when they sign restricted free agents Jakub Voracek and Marc-Andre Bourdon.
They could free more room by dealing winger James van Riemsdyk ($4.25 million), and, remember, Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter, a potential UFA who figures to get a big raise from his $3.5 million salary, is on the Flyers’ radar.
The 40-year-old Jagr, who scored just one goal in 11 playoff games _ none against the Devils _ said he didn’t know what would happen in the off-season.
“I have to say, thanks for the support from the fans,” he said. “I love everyone on this team. That was probably the most enjoyable year I’ve ever had. I’ve won some Cups, I’ve won some trophies, but I loved this year. From the organization to the last player on the team, and the fans, they were so nice to me.
“I hate to finish it right now; that’s the worst feeling. You finish the whole story, the whole year, that’s a sad day today for me…I wanna cry right now.”
Breakaways. Claude Giroux said overconfidence played a role in the series loss the Devils. “I think we thought we were going to walk over New Jersey,” he said…..In the last two games, the Flyers had a total of 34 giveaways while the Devils had 11…..It marked just the 11th time (out of 96 playoff series) that the Flyers had lost four straight in the post-season.

- He doesn't play DEFENSE, which is his job. Just because he is on the freaking ice at the same time we score means he is good at keeping it out of our net? False. We have plenty of scorers up front to put the puck in the net and pad Carle's +/- numbers (a worthless stat).
kozykoz26 - what??? the puck goes in the other teams net 55 more times than it goes in the flyers net, with him on the ice. That is exactly what it means. if it didn't he would be a minus player. The kid is only 27, is he worth a big payday? not really, give him a reasonable raise, take the plus 55 and the 82 games played. in three years he'll be in the allstar game. write it down.
whires - Carle has been paired with Pronger and on the ice with our top scorers. That is why he is a plus 55. Put him out there with the third line with MAB or Gus and it becomes a minus 55.
no10leclair - Exactly. Look at his +/-, the biggest bs stat in hockey, it mirrors Pronger's. The year before Pronger got here Carle was a +2. He sucks, get over it and get out of here. I just want this team to get incrementally better and matt carle is certainly not going to contribute to that.
kozykoz26 - Speaking of BS stats....so, Chris Pronger played 50 games last season and was +7...meanwhile Matt Carle played 82 games and was +30
Last season, Matt Carle had 40 points, and 38 of them were at even strength.
Chris Pronger had 25 points, and 14 of them on the power play.
Explain to me how Chris Pronger has made Matt Carle's numbers better?

Time to move on. Lavvy and Berube go. Bob, JVR and Voracek go. Kubina walks. Carle walks. Package what players and picks for a higher 1st round pick and take the best goalie there. Deal with the aftermath. Do it again next year until yuo find a goalie capable of fitting in with this team, who is more than just athletic, and is a star. MichaelZoe
Don't like Carle, have never liked Carle, would be happy if he wasn't here next season. Jagr, he meant a lot more to this team than any stat will show, they (Flyers) should try to work something out with him, he should have one more strong season left in him. Everyone knows the D is what needs a makeover, guess we'll see if Homer can pull off another strong move or two, just sayin'... DJ
Matt Carle is very frustrating to me. He has a high skill level but for some reason is a freaking "TURNOVER" machine. I would let him walk and pick up someone more consistent in the defensive zone. Jagr is a little easier to let go due to his age. The NHL schedule is a little too much for his body and in the playoffs it really showed. That being said, I don't regret his signing at all for 1 year. His leadership skills and the example he set for the young guys were well worth the $$$. younged- Carle is one of those chameleon players who performs better or worse depending on his partner. He was never so reviled as he is now when he was paired with a healthy Pronger. They were regarded as Philly's best pair at times. icarus
Ed, what have you done for us lately? The days of the Broad Street Bullies of 74/75 are a distant memory for those us who actually were alive and able to cheer for the cup. Fast track some 37 years later, and the reality of the "patch work" roster hasn't worked. Since Hextal/Lindbergh, the merry go round of goal tenders hasn't led to any consistancy. A few trips to the Cup finals (empty of course), has left us fed up. The "bad apples" of last year seem to be flourinshing in LA, yet not good enough for this team. Ed, the time to clean house "upstairs" is NOW! drhoffman

JVR gone! Trade him for "D". Trade BOB or play him in Glens falls. He need a lot of work. Carle was not worth the money. Goalie and defense coaches are needed now. Timmo needs help. Might be injured. JVR like Carter in his ability to float, not stop and start, circle. Whatever happens to Ovie the irresponsible should happen to JV. Bryz beat PENS and could have beat nj with some defense. He is a keeper!
Get it?

Trade Hartnell, you will never get more value for him then after this year. Sign a younger cheaper, more defensive grinder. Gotta keep Carle for this system, he moves the puck up better then any other D man on the team. Try and move Briere if you get a good deal. They must make moves to keep Simmonds, Schenn, Coots, Read and Talbot. This team has great potential, but can't hold onto the aging fan favorites of Briere, Hartnell and possibly Coburn. jag32wire

He was by far our strongest defensemen during the playoffs and appears to be gaining confidence.
