Upshall dealt; defenseman acquired

POSTED: Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 3:29 PM

The Flyers today dealt winger Scottie Upshall and No. 2 draft pick to Phoenix for hard-nosed winger Dan Carcillo.

The Flyers traded speed for toughness. Carcillo, a 5-11, 202-pounder, has league-high 174 penalty minutes and is known for his tenacity.

A short time later, the Flyers acquired defenseman Kyle McLelan, who played only in the AHL this season, from San Jose.

Carcillo makes $850,000 ($884,000 cap hit), so the deal gives the Flyers a little cap space because Upshall was making $1.2 million.

Carcillo, 24, who is signed through the end of next season, had three goals and seven assists this year, while Upshall, 25, had seven goals and 14 assists.

The 6-foot, 197-pound Upshall scored a goal in Boston Tuesday to trigger the Flyers' 4-2 win.

In another move, the Flyers acquired defenseman McLaren, 31, for a sixth-round draft selection.
McLaren, a 6-4, 230-pouder, had no goals and six assists in 17 games with the AHL Worcester Sharks this season.
In the 1995 draft, McLaren was Boston's No. 1 pick (ninth overall),
McLaren is expected to be assigned to the Phantoms. He gives the Flyers depth in case of injuries.
In 719 career NHL games with Boston and San Jose, McLaren had 207 points and was a plus-27.

Meanwhile, many of the Flyers' Eastern Conference opponents _ especially the Rangers _ made moves to bolster themselves today.

We needed the cap space so we don't have to keep sending Giroux back and forth to the Phantoms. They saved about 350K in cap space, doesn't sound like a lot but it allows Giroux to stay with the big team for the rest of the year.

Today is a day that I will never forget. I am truly embarassed to be a fan of a franchise that refuses to deal with reality. We needed another neandrathal fighter? Are you kidding? Holmgren can try to sell this any way he wants. But he blew it today!

What a terrible set of deals. Rangers and Devils got better and Flyers made questionable trades and loose guys to waivers.

michaelZoe, Carcillo is a joke why? He can add as much offense as Upshall can and be a hell of a lot more physical. And if your going to talk about penalties, know that Scottie goes to the sin bin a lone more than Carcillo does. Carcillo has those mins but he has brought someone with him majority of the time. Look at the game logs.

Dude, McClaren will not see any playing time, save for a huge injury. They just can't afford his salary to come up to the big squad.

thanks, so Jay-Bo is staying put. SUCKS? Philly7, unless you have seen him play recently or know something I don't, you're an idiot. He is 6-5 240 lbs who can HIT and is a PLUS 27 in his career. Do you realize what it takes to be a 12 year vet who doesn't score and be plus 27? Obviously not. In comparison, Denis Gauthier, who the Flyers thought would be the big hitter on the blue line is a MINUS 3 in his career. see the difference? and again, for a 6th round pick, it's a no-brainer. Now, compared to Jay-Bo or some other move, no, it's not a barnstormer. But Hatcher is done, Alberts surprisingly turned into a better skate then a hitter. So, having McLaren for that 3rd round against the Devils, Bruins or even Rangers, when heads are flying and bodies are crunching ISN'T SO BAD.

still hearing we are close to a deal, we need something to make up for the trash we just acquired. The earlier deals made no sense unless it was for a bigger move to take place. We really only saved about 350,000 between Upshall and Carcillo's contracts. Also, the only way Mclaren comes up is if Coburn, Timonen, Jones, or Carle are put on long term IR. He will make 1.25 million the rest of the year so he is not replacing anyone unless there is a major injury.

The final trade is Chris Gratton for Lupul and a 3rd rounder.

Don't forget Eminger was traded for Matt Carle. I think that's been a good trade. Carle's been big for us playing with Coburn. As for Upshall, yeah I really liked him.

McLaren for ONLY a 6th round pick is great because McLaren is a +27 in his carrer. For a guy who doesn't score, that is amazing. If he doesn't work out, the 6th round pick is nothing. NOW Upshall for this clown? TERRIBLE move UNLESS the bigger trade is coming, which I smell J-BO for Cote/Carcillo, Lupul, and...Parent/Carle/Jones and a draft pick.

Eminger has been traded twice this year...sucks to be him....I think the other deal is not the McLeran trade. if it is o well. I think Homer is trying to clear cap space for after the season. We were not going to keep Upshall anyway, might as well get what you can.

I don't like this trade. Another guy to take penalties and it only cost us Upshall and a 2nd round pick? Holmgren is not having a good year, going back to draft day when he traded 1st round pick for Caps 7th defenseman who lasted 12 games here.

I really liked Upshall's play...Cote was marginal. Anyone impart some knowledge on these moves? Thought (hoped) Biron could be dealt for some talent.
