Surprise, surprise: No hearing for Carcillo
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
As Gomer Pyle used to say: Surprise, surprise, surprise.
That's my reaction to the news that, as of 1:40 p.m. on Friday, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren still had not heard from the NHL office about Dan Carcillo’s hit on the New York Rangers’ Ruslan Fedotenko on Thursday.
“It’s probably safe to say” there won’t be a hearing, Holmgren said after Friday’s practice in Voorhees.
Holmgren said he thought Carcillo made a legal hit and that he didn’t expect the league to call.
Carcillo, who has a history of suspensions, admitted he WAS surprised not to have a conference call with Colin Campbell, the league’s disciplinary dean.
In the third period of the Flyers’ 4-1 win Thursday, Carcillo appeared to elbow Fedotenko to the jaw as the Ranger was falling to the ice. No penalty was called.
“It was kind of a weird situation. I didn’t mean to take a run at him or anything,” Carcillo said on Friday. “It was an awkward position and it happened pretty quick. He was kind of falling down. I don’t know if he ducked of what he did, but it was a weird, weird hit.”
Fedotenko, a former Flyer, said the referee told him he shouldn’t have ducked.
In other words, if he hadn’t ducked to avoid the hit, he wouldn’t have been hit in the head.
“If he was up, it would have been a regular hit,” Carcillo said.
“The kid was falling and all of a sudden, the position became vulnerable, but I didn’t think Danny did anything (wrong),” coach Peter Laviolette said.
So expect Carcillo in the lineup Saturday night, when the Flyers play in Long Island against an Islanders team that has lost six straight. The Flyers will be aiming for their first six-game winning streak in nearly two years.

Andreas Nodl has recovered from a shoulder injury and could return Saturday. During part of Friday’s practice, Nodl was on a line with Mike Richards and Eric Wellwood, leaving to speculation that struggling winger James van Riemsdyk (0 goals) could be a healthy scratch Saturday/

Asked if goalie Brian Boucher would get one of the two starts this weekend, Laviolette said, “I’m not sure at this point.” Best guess: Boucher faces the Islanders, and Sergei Bobrovsky opposes the Caps in Washington on Sunday.

Typical Philly fans. Flyers playing great. Time to start trading guys because, good or bad, I like to complain about the local teams. Wonder how long it'll be until I hear the "trade Bobrovsky now while we can get someone for him" talk. You guys are clowns and don't watch the games. SFPhillyphan
richien12, I concur, you're right on the money on this one. And MikeZoe, Madden? Just what we need, another center. How old are you? Paul1954- I can understand a lot of people getting down on JVR. I haven't seen anything impressive either. But personally I don't think he has been put in a role that fits him yet. The Flyers would get nothing if they traded him, so at this point, might as well try to improve his skills. Maybe even have him play on the Phantoms for a bit.
- Who cares about Boucher? We want BOB!!!
I've pretty much reconciled myself to the fact that the few people left on here who actually stick up for a full-on stiff like JVR is probably because they are related to him. JVR = built like Tarzan, plays like Jane. stormrider
What drugs were being passed around the table when the Flyers Brass drafted JVR? Wellwood has more upside than JVR. I'd say Nodl too but then everybody would know I'm crazy! I'd like Ryan for JVR and Carter. That would be a steal. younged
lol...Billy Tibbits? the Therapist? LiLAlConroy- Stop defending JVR. I want him to be good like most, but he loses every single puck battle in the corners and along the wall...if you're not scoring, you better be working, and he flat out is not. He looks as soft as ever and needs a wake up call Zheredev style...sit him for a week.
The only thing wrong with van Riemsdyk is his confidence. If they started shopping him, they'd have 29 GM's on the phone. JSaq
strummerdood, HandNik... FINALLY SOME FLYERS FANS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE WATCHING... The rest of you are the same misfits screaming shoot while the players work the puck around on the power-play. They are called shooting lanes people, if there isnt a shooting lane that means if they listen to you yelling, the shot will get blocked. If there is a shooting lane and no one is parked in front of the goalie, why shoot the puck? Goalies are good enough at this level, if they can see it, they will save it... Strummerdood and HandNik, breathe of fresh air my friends... broadstbu11y
I have no problem with JVR. He's putting himself into good position and eventually they'll drop in. Give him a chance. HandNik
The Ducks aren't giving Ryan up and it seems like he wants to play with Perry and Getzlaf for as long as possible. JVR has been looking faster and tougher on the ice but he needs to put it in the net. He creates chances and is getting the assists but at some point he needs to contribute some goals. Saying he's a bust is ridiculous though, the kids 21 years old. I hope people stop dropping Guerin's name around as if it had the same weight as Pronger's. The man looked shaky as hell during the preseason and why waste cap space for an older guy like that. Nodl's been playing better than "decent" and Wellwood has, on multiple occasions, come very, very close to his first NHL goal. And Dustin Byfuglien for 3 million? lol, okay. strummerdood
I would never give up Giroux, that man is awesome. Think about him with Ryan on a line. rgreen72
Sorry . . that was the Ducks . . . ingy9
I heard kings wanted Giroux for Bobby Ryan . . we couldn't give JVR away now . . maybe last year . . but not now ingy9
rgreen72_______ Yes, I would do that in a second. Ryan is already there and is the guy teh flyers have wanted forever but that aint happenin, if it was going to, it would have taken place this summer when he wasnt agreeing to contract terms with anaheim. broadstbu11y
I wouldn't let JVR shine my statue. GDornhoefer
Guys, I wouldnt expect anyone to cut JVR any slack nor should you... he was the 2nd overall pick behind Kane. Lets remember that this kid is still a kid and he was drafted to be the prototypical power forward LW but the modern version. These guys take time to develop.Im not saying hes going to be a stud just saying that your expectations should be lowered... Prime example, John Leclair, not a 2nd overall pick but still a high pick for Montreal. Montreal was impatient w/ his development and we reaped the reward. Never cracked 20 goals w/ MTL, comes to Philly and cracks 20 in his first season and than 5 straight 40+ goal years. Again, not saying JVR will do the same but hes still a kid who hasnt grown into his buddy. You want to bash someone, stick w/ pretty boy Carter. The guy who is dominant in one period and than takes off the rest of the game... broadstbu11y
How is this JVR and Carter for Bobby Ryan? rgreen72
Michael Zoe you must not be watching the games. No offense, but Wellwood has been playing exciting hockey and really taking advantage of his ice time and Nodl has played decent too while out there. Don't you think there is a reason a 3 time Cup winner still isn't playing for a team? Holmey would have signed him if he had anything left in the tank believe me. richien12- Too early to give up on JVR.
JVR is a bust. I thought they said he looked great in training camp, had bulked up and looked quicker. Now after 13 games, still no goals? BobbyD
Andreas Nodl and Eric Wellwood???? If I'm Mike Richards I'm inviting Bill Guerin to practice myself. You've got to be kidding me. Can imagine what a crusher this team will be with Bob, current D, and maybe a steady lineup of forwards? What is Holmgrem's problem? Good lord, for $1-1.5 million I'd rather see John Madden playing with Richards. I'll take his 3 Cup rings, defensive play, & faceoff wins over his lack of scoring. Or trade JVR for Dusty Bufflin and give Richards a 265 lbs linemate to crash the net. MichaelZoe
JVR = the waste of the #2 overall pick. The kid brings NOTHING to the table. He's still young and has time, but a pick this high should not be contributing so little at this point in their career. He is on a 3rd line and seems lost on the ice. Brutal pick that could set most teams back quite a bit.....we are lucky to have other stepping up (Like Claude Giroux.....what a stud!). Tar Heel 1
Billy Tibbets is my step dad TobyRitter- The "Ruskie" used to "dive" and whine when he was a Flyboy. Things haven't changed. Wiss.. dogman5
Scott Daniels is the picture next to the dictionary when you look up the word brutal, JVR is next to BUST uCanTseeMe19
shawn antoski was the definition of brutal vipers19
JVR is brutal. antoski
