Sources: No trade talks for Weber

POSTED: Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 11:59 AM

Two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the Flyers and Nashville Predators have NOT had any trade talks since star defenseman Shea Weber signed a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet last Wednesday.

That would seem to suggest that Nashville plans to match the Flyers' offer. Either that, or the Predators are delaying trade talks because they are trying to get the Flyers to call with a sweet proposal.

This is high-stakes poker, folks.

At stake: The direction of two franchises for the next 14 years.

Oh, and $110 million.

Nashville must decide by 11:30 on Wednesday night whether to match the offer for the restricted free agent. If it does, Weber is retained by the Preds.

If Nashville doesn't match, Weber goes to the Flyers for four No. 1 draft picks.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren and Nashville GM David Poile have talked once since Weber signed the offer sheet. But as of Tuesday morning, no trade was discussed, two sources confirmed.

One would think if Nashville didn't plan to sign the offer sheet, it would be trying to orchestrate a trade in an attempt to get more than the four No. 1 picks.

Nashville could agree not to sign the offer sheet in exchange for making a deal, one in which it would trade some of the No. 1 selections back to the Flyers for NHL players.

Stay tuned. This game of high-stakes poker is heading toward a fascinating finish.

Flyers will acquire Weber. How does everyone feel about speculating on the upcoming season? Flyers vs. Kings 2013 Cup Finals anyone?

Food for thought: What if Poile called Homer and Homer responded "you have two choices" match or take four picks. We're not negotiating. Those negotiations fell through, thus the offer sheet." That is just as likely. After all, don't forget that with all this CBA stuff Ed Snider psobably is aware of the financial health or lack thereof concerning the Preds. It is no longer a hockey decision for Nashville, it is now a business decision.

Hey guys...I have to admit I don't follow hockey much (more into the other three big sports), and reading about this potential signing by the Flyers has brought up a question to me...If the Preds don't match the offer, the Flyers give up four 1st round draft picks. Aren't draft picks valuable? I know in the offer major sports a team giving up four 1st round picks would be a mega-deal, whereas here is seems it's no big deal. Does the NHL value draft picks differently than MLB, NFL and NBA? Just a novice hockey fan wondering...

Nashville will keep Weber, regardless if it's good long term for the franchise, not keeping him will make the already small fan base irate, driving down attendance immediately.

They have to match the offer because of fans perception. Effectively screwing them long term, but the fans won't see that.

Not sure why people are so sure that Nashville will match. For one thing, I think 4 first round picks is a pretty decent haul for Weber (who has never won a Norris). Second, does Nashville really want to pay $27mm in the first year - and over $60 million in the first 5 - to a player that doesn't want to be there? If Weber had any intention of remaining in Nashville, I doubt he would have signed the contract. If Nashville matches, they could have another Rick Nash on their hands (and how did they do on that trade?) - the one difference being they would have paid $27mm to Weber, and then tried to trade him for pennies on the dollar? Yeah, Poile will join the same ranks as Howson. Never say never, but I for one would be very surprised to see Nashville match

If the Preds intend to match the offer, there is no need to talk. If they conclude that it is against the best inteests of the team not to match, there is no need to signal that before the Wednesday deadlne. They can still talk trade with the Flyers to return #1 picks afterwards. What is the best explanation for why they would be talking with the Flyers while still deciding what they want to do?

Great news, Flyers fans!!! Nashville matched the Flyers' offer. Thank God! The last thing the Flyers needed was that enormous contract coming here and the loss of all those draft picks. Consider his a blessing in disguise. Holmgren would have killed this franchise with that deal.
