Some folks are saying the NHL is becoming the No Hitting League.
Evidence supported that stance Wednesday when Flyers forward Brayden Schenn was suspended for one game by the NHL because of an illegal hit on the Devils' Anton Volchenkov.
Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's dean of discipline, said Schenn delivered "significant contact to the head" during the Flyers' 3-0 loss in New Jersey on Tuesday.
In another matter, GM Paul Holmgren announced that left winger Scott Hartnell would be out indefinitey because of an injury to his left foot. Hartnell was hit by a shot taken by teammate Kimmo Timonen on Tuesday.
As for Schenn, he took a slight leap before crashing into Volchenkov in the second period. No penalty was called on the play.
I understand that the NHL is trying to protect players from concussions.
But I don't understand how this hit constituted a suspension.
Should a charging penalty have been called?
Absolutely.
But the NHL has gone too far and is taking physicality out of the game.
Fred Shero, rest his soul, is probably rolling over in his grave.
Volchenkov, you might recall, drilled Schenn with a clean hit in last year’s playoffs. Schenn said his hit Tuesday was “not a revenge play at all. He had his head down and me coming off the bench and seeing that.”
Schenn, who will forfeit about $4,700 in pay for the game he misses, said he was surprised that the hit drew a disciplinary hearing from the league.
Holmgren said the Flyers would not appeal the suspension.
Without Hartnell and Schenn, the Flyers might play Tom Sestito and Jody Shelley on Thursday. If the Flyers recall a player from the AHL Phantoms, Harry Zolnierczyk, Jason Akeson and Marcel Noebels appear to be the top candidates.
Here is the video explanation from Shanahan:
Volchenkov must answer for his hit on Danny Briere. No Lady Bing this year for Schenn. I'm OK with it. Blvd Al
Gimme a break! That hit hardly warranted a penalty let alone a suspension. I lost a little bit of respect for Shanahan on this one. PZ2012- I didnt have any respect for Shanny to begin with

How is the 2013 entry draft looking? Hopefully the Flyers won't get the scoogie again like they did with JVR. Lucky it's a short season because it's not going to be pretty. hunglikeaton
First of all, Shanahan played for the Devils. That's all you need to know about the suspension.
Second, Flyers players are getting injured from shots that hit their feet and pucks are going into the net off of their feet. Some would say this is just bad luck. Others would say that the Flyers are woefully out of position. Which camp are you in?
TexColorado- It's bad luck.
If you get hit with a shot while screening the goalie you're hardly "woefully out of position". You're right where you're supposed to be.

What about the hit delivered to Timmonen's head that dropped him to the ice? Guess that one was ok. Considering Clarkson actually got penalized for that call.
The refs lately have been calling garbage on certain teams and letting others get away with everything. When the refs are up for their negotiation, it should be merit based. It will save the league a ton of money. ena1977
Schenn leaves his skates (why?) and makes head contact (stupid). Should have been a penalty. Suspension is deserved. Oh yes, the league is out to get US, I mean the Flyers. 3 games in and the crying has started. mfaref37- "Schenn leaves his skates (why?) and makes head contact (stupid). Should have been a penalty. Fairy dust all over you by chance? I thought I detected a hint of mint.

Suspension is a joke. No different then at least 3 others ive seen so far this year. Devils should be penalized just for stepping out on the ice and playing so called hockey. Most boring thing on tv. Refs have been terrible this year. Their the ones who should be fined. Shanahan is an embarrassment.Another ex jock who needed a job. taydan- wonnderng how many games letang will recieve for that steamroll he laid on komaserik
pittsvilleflyer - "wondering how many games Letang will receive for that steamroll he laid on Komaserik"
Nada, nicht, non, zippo. He plays alongside the face of hockey. Which has acne, BTW.

Shanahan can buy himself a nice lunch with his part of the take. Sleazer! Claudio Vernight
Speaking of Schenn, Luke that is, JVR was number one star tonight against the hated Penquins-2 goals and an assist- not to bad for a Flyer cast off.... Mike Boryla- I watched the game and thought it poetic justice that JVR scored two. But I don't think labeling him a "cast-off" tells the story. The Flyers needed help on D and they had to give up value to get value. Luke had better be damned good to justify that trade, IMHO.
