Pronger is out; Lavy responds to Ruff

POSTED: Friday, April 22, 2011, 11:52 AM

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will not play tonight in Game 5 against Buffalo at the Wells Fargo Center.

The series is tied at two games apiece.

The Flyers will be without their best defesneman and their leading scorer, Jeff Carter (36 goals in regular season), who is sidelined with a knee injury.

Pronger, who has not played since March 8 because of a broken right hand, took slap shots at practice for the first time since his injury. That seemed to indicate he would play Friday night.

After all the regulars left the ice, however, Pronger stayed on the ice for more than a half hour. Usually the players who stay for extra work do not play that night.

Carter (knee) and Andreas Nodl (facial injury) were not at practice and will not play Friday night. Rookie Ben Holmstrom will go into the lineup

These were the lines at the morning skate:

  • Hartnell-Briere-Leino.
  • Van Riemsdyk-Giroux-Powe.
  • Versteeg-Richards-Zherdev.
  • Carcillo-Betts-Holmstrom.

Peter Laviolette was amused by Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff’s comments about the Flyers “whining.” A smiling Laviolette said one of his assistants imitated Ruff and replaced the word "whining" with "winning."

Lindy Ruff and his mustard gas enemas. He needs better meds and a better town to call home.

Put shelly in....why not give him a shot and be a huge inside presense and screener vs Miller. We don't have anyone that serves this role and its indicitive to our PP struggles. Need an inside presence or the box can expand on the perimeter, which is why we can't get any crisp passing going.

lookin forward to a classic game tonight. both teams have played some great hockey. now lets hope the refs dont decide the game tonight. no way miller gets as lucky as he did the other night what with all our chances at the net. flyers D need to man up again, 2-1 philly in OT!

Please don't say "Miller was lucky"...it makes us Flyer fans look like idiots. It is like saying "Crosby was lucky" or "Ovie was lucky". They have the better goalie..big deal! We are better everywhere else. GO FLYERS!

the Flyers will play Pronger if they get desperate, but i don't see it getting to that point. and if they play Pronger and lose anyway, they would have no other game changers to spring on Buffalo. the Flyers will wait until the next round to play him. note: i've been almost 100% wrong about my Pronger predictions. the Flyers' chemistry is working fine without him. the Flyers killed their chances years ago when they threw Lindros (concussion) into the mix even though they had been doing well without him. Pronger is not Lindros, but they've been playing well without him. i look forward to seeing Pronger on the ice when he's healthy, but for now, just kick back and watch the other Flyers win.

Pronger being out again tonight makes me think we're not going to see him at all this series.

Agree with the silliness of calling Miller "lucky." That is just as idiotic as saying "we've outplayed them all series." Truth is, this is a tight series - an empty net goal is all that separates the scoring and each team has won 2 overall and one each on the road. Looking forward to the war ahead!

Enough with the goalie debate already! what we have is good enough to win... it the other guys that need to setup and play fundamental D ... Hate to say it but im glad to see someone will get a chance to play with Carter on the DL... he sucks! Richard + Z + JRV + Giroux is our only chance of scoring. Let see if they bring the hitting...
    Good Luck OrangeMen!
