As expected, veteran defenseman Chris Pronger was named the Flyers' 18th captain on Friday. Center Danny Briere and defenseman Kimmo Timonen were selected as the alternates.

All are great choices. My only question: What took so long to name them?

Perhaps the Flyers were waiting to see if Pronger would be able to play most of the season before naming him. A few days ago, GM Paul Holmgren said he expects Pronger to be ready for the Oct. 6 opener in Boston.

Pronger, who will turn 37 in October, is coming off back surgery.

The Flyers have gone from Captain Quiet (Mike Richards) to Captain Snarl. There will be no mistaking which player is the leader of this team.

"With Chris' experience and presence, we felt he was the perfect player to take over as captain," Holmgren said.

Holmgren said Pronger, Briere and Timonen "know what it takes to win and are excellent role models, both on and off the ice."
