Pronger could return; Carter out

Signs point to Chris Pronger returning to the Flyers' lineup Friday, and forward Jeff Carter being sidelined as the Flyers face visiting Buffalo in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The series is tied at two games each.

Pronger, 36, hasn't played since March 8 because of a broken hand.  If he feels good after Friday's morning skate, he figures to play in a limited role. He may not be used on the power play, but his presence in the lineup _ even if he only plays about 15 minutes _ would give the Flyers an emotional boost.

The veteran defenseman still hasn't been able to take slap shots in practices.

Carter, who had a team-high 36 goals in the regular season, injured his right knee in a collision with Tyler Myers on Wednesday. The Flyers said he was day to day, but there are indications he will miss a few games.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren strongly denied a report that Carter tore his ACL and would miss several weeks.

With Carter out, the Flyers could move Darroll Powe to the third line and insert Jody Shelley on the fourth line. They could also opt to play one of their youngsters, Ben Holmstrom or Eric Wellwood. If Andreas Nodl has recovered from a facial injury, he would be the club's No. 1 option.
