BUFFALO _ Flyers goalie Michael Leighton, who started one NHL game this season, allowed three goals on seven first-period shots and was replaced by Brian Boucher at the start of the second period Sunday afternoon in Buffalo.

Trailing 3-1, the Flyers got even on second-period goals by James van Riemsdyk and Danny Briere (power play). For Briere, it was his second goal of the game and fifth of the series.

Seventh-seeded Buffalo regained the lead on Nathan Gerbe's goal with 3:54 left in the second period. Boucher failed to catch the shot, which may have deflected off defenseman Sean O'Donnell.

Defenseman Chris Pronger was back in the lineup, but he was used only on the PP in the first two periods, playing 3:24 in that span.

Leighton was awful in the first period as Buffalo built a 3-1 lead, including a pair of power-play goals by Thomas Vanek.

The second-seeded Flyers outshot the Sabres in the opening period, 17-8, but Leighton was rusty on plays in front of the net.

Just 2:15 into the game, Leighton allowed a Rob Niedermayer shot frm the right circle to go over his left shoulder, giving the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

The team that scored first won the previous five games in this series.

Buffalo increased the lead to 2-0 on Vanek's power-play goal with 11:19 left in the first period.

Shortly thereafter, the Flyers had no shots on their first PP of the game. That made them 2 for 27 on the PP in this series.

Briere cut the lead to 2-1 with 5:07 left in the first, but Vanek answered late in the period, knocking the puck away from Leighton's pads and into the net..

Buffalo entered the game with a 3-2 lead in the series.
