Pronger undergoing knee surgery; Schenn recalled, Nodl placed on waivers

It turns out Chris Pronger's virus wasn't the only thing holding him back, as the Flyers led everyone to believe.

On Monday, the club announced that the often-injured Pronger will undergo left-knee surgery and miss four more weeks. It will be Pronger's fifth surgery in the last 16 months.

Pronger, 37, has missed 10 games this season, including six after he took a stick to his eye. The Flyers are 5-4-1 without him this year. He missed 32 regular-season games last season.

In the last two seasons, Pronger has missed 42 games; the Flyers have won only 21 of them.

It appears Pronger will play in the Winter Classic on Jan. 2.

"We were hopeful with the time missed with a virus, things would settle down in his knee," GM Paul Holmgren said.

    But that didn't happen.

Holmgren said Pronger would have some "loose bodies" cleaned out; he called the surgery a "maintenance" procedure and said the knee was otherwise sound.

Holmgren also announced that Brayden Schenn would be recalled from the Phantoms, and that Andreas Nodl was placed on waivers.

Pronger and Andreas Lilja will go on the long-term injured list.

Jaromir Jagr, rehabbing after a groin injury, sklated Monday and there is a chance he will play Friday in Anaheim. James van Riemsdyk, another injured winger, is a longshot to play this weekend, Holmgren said.

Let's hope the rest of the team gets over the Pronger-less virus. Get well soon, Chris. Lord knows the D needs you!

Don't like the Nodl waive. He played gritty minutes. Guess Briere whined to Holmgren after Danny skated right into him the other day.

There is no replacing Prongs. You either have a #1 defenseman or you don't.

About time they waived Nodl. I don't see what their infatuation was/is with him.

Can things get any worse in Philly sports right now? Oh yeah, the Sixers are going to start.

It's a good thing that we have a shut down goalie to compensate for the hole in the defense....oh wait.

It's a good thing we have a great two way center to compensate for the hole in our defense...oh wait.

Will the Flyers miss Chris Pronger over the time he will be out?
    Does philly.com pose stupid questions?

Maintenance. "Maintenance" surgery is something you do in the off season not in the middle of a season. Can't count on Pronger anymore. He was a no show in the playoffs last year and expect something else to be wrong come May.

How about this for a poll question:
Whose contract is the biggest albatross?
    A) Chris Pronger
    B)Andre Iguodala
    C}Michael Vick
    D)Chase Utley

Philadelphia, where the overpaid and underplayed are always welcome.

Pronger is a sure bet hall of famer, doesn't belong on that list.

So funny...I said on here once he missed the second game it probably wasn't a virus...now news of a "cleanout" procedure and the knee is structurally sound. I got news for you Homer, once you have loose bodies braking off and floating around in there causing swelling and pain, the nkee is no longer structurally sound! He'll get it cleaned out but more damage is certain as the joint continues to age and break down. he is facing a total knee replacement and will not finish out his entire contract as a player with the Flyers. Too bad, we got Darien Hatcher and now Pronger about 5 years too late into their careers to do us much good. The gamble you take when you try to win every year I guess. "Structurally sound", that's a funny one......
