Pronger undergoing knee surgery; Schenn recalled, Nodl placed on waivers

It turns out Chris Pronger's virus wasn't the only thing holding him back, as the Flyers led everyone to believe.

On Monday, the club announced that the often-injured Pronger will undergo left-knee surgery and miss four more weeks. It will be Pronger's fifth surgery in the last 16 months.

Pronger, 37, has missed 10 games this season, including six after he took a stick to his eye. The Flyers are 5-4-1 without him this year. He missed 32 regular-season games last season.

In the last two seasons, Pronger has missed 42 games; the Flyers have won only 21 of them.

It appears Pronger will play in the Winter Classic on Jan. 2.

"We were hopeful with the time missed with a virus, things would settle down in his knee," GM Paul Holmgren said.

    But that didn't happen.

Holmgren said Pronger would have some "loose bodies" cleaned out; he called the surgery a "maintenance" procedure and said the knee was otherwise sound.

Holmgren also announced that Brayden Schenn would be recalled from the Phantoms, and that Andreas Nodl was placed on waivers.

Pronger and Andreas Lilja will go on the long-term injured list.

Jaromir Jagr, rehabbing after a groin injury, sklated Monday and there is a chance he will play Friday in Anaheim. James van Riemsdyk, another injured winger, is a longshot to play this weekend, Holmgren said.

Stop with the pessimism guys....The Flyers have a good, young team that will keep them in it...I actually don't mind that Pronger is taking care of lingering injuries right now...We need him healthy the second half of the season and going into the playoffs...Would rather him be fresh because when he is healthy and in the line-up, he is very effective. As for Nodl, he was relatively soft and did not bring that much skill to the table so no big loss....my opinions of course!

Interesting list, schnitz, although I would have replaced chase with howard. All were signed as stars, and have underperformed, although some due to injury. Bad luck I guess

Vick overpaid? Wha, wha, WHAT? He is the only reason to watch a moribund team, destined to oblivion by the likes of Andy Reid and the geniuses who ratified Castillo as a defensive coach. Back to hockey.... I love Prongs for his nasty edge, but he getting older. Certain injuries are worse than others. Last year we had feet broken, Leaky Leighton's unmentioned "sore back", was certainly a herniated disc. "Structurally sound", orthopedically, means the loose bodies are STABLE, well-tolerated. Unstable? Well, you get the picture. We are looking at the obvious instability of a DEGENERATIVE joint with longstanding arthritis I'm sure. Hope I'm wrong. I hate to ever be on the medical side of Mark1.

Are any of you orthopedic surgeons? Obviously not. Comment on what you know, or give us your opinions, but spare us your medical (mis)interpretations. Stable means no ligament damage (ACL, PCL, MCL's), which Pronger apparently does not have. Loose bodies is an ambiguous term. There's more to the story since he's having the surgery mid-season, maybe a meniscus tear and/or MCL sprain, but that's no big deal. Rest him through the holidays and that's that. Will he have a total knee replacement. Yeah, probably, in like 10 years when he's hung up his skates.
