Penguins steal series from Flyers; what's next?

POSTED: Saturday, April 25, 2009, 11:23 PM

Somehow, the Flyers aren’t going to Pittsburgh on Monday.
Somehow, they blew a 3-0 lead and dropped a season-ending 5-3 decision to the resilient Pittsburgh Penguins before a stunned sellout crowd at the Wachovia Center Saturday.
Somehow, they lost the series, four games to two, even though they outplayed the Penguins from the second period of Game 2 until early in the second period of Saturday’s Game 6.
They lost, in part, because the Penguins’ marquee players, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, totally outplayed Flyers’ stars Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. And because the Flyers, with their season on the line, were outshot by a 28-14 margin in the final two periods Saturday.
     Outshot and outplayed.
So where do the Flyers go from here?
Well, because a $29 million cap hit next year will be tied to five players _ Carter, Richards, Danny Briere, Simon Gagne and Kimmo Timonen _ the Flyers won’t have a lot of flexibility in the off-season.
That said, it’s important to remember that this series was virtually even, that the Flyers could have easily won it with a call here, a save there.
Wholesale changes aren’t needed. But the team needs more physicality from its defensemen.
Never was that more evident than Saturday, when two of the Penguins’ goals were scored when players batted pucks out of the air and into the net.
I’m in the minority of people who think the Flyers can compete for the Stanley Cup with Marty Biron as the goalie.
Biron wasn’t why the Flyers lost this series. He had a 2.29 goals-against average before Saturday, and only two of the Game 6 goals were his fault.
Re-sign Biron and get a crease-clearing defenseman like Montreal’s Mike Komisarek, a potential free agent. The    Flyers missed the injured Derian Hatcher this year more than they will admit.
They need to sign or trade for a player with that type of grit, that kind of physical presence in front of the net.

first of all, if these cracks about "whiny" philly fans, especially on a philadelphia paper's website, are giving you pens fans your kicks and making you feel better about yourselves, godspeed. whatever. personally, i feel crosby and malkin (especially malkin) are extremely talented players and players you can easily build a team around. i believe the calibur of both teams ALMOST even out, with pittsburgh getting the advantage at the moment. two all star players, a fantastic goalie, but after that i believe the other players are mediocre, good at best. the flyers have more good and great players. 6 players (7 if briere wasn't hurt, and maybe 8 if giroux were starting all season on at least the second line) who scored 25 or more goals. the flyers don't have the luxury of having TWO game changing players. it's tough to get even one. the flyers are a player or two away from going deeper into the playoffs. the pens have a good shot but ultimately i think boston is better and will take the eastern conference. -- p.s. well said OMIGODEAGLES. how did the pirates do this season? do they still even exist? just wondering...

Completely agree..... i've been saying the Flyers need a replacement for Hatcher since last season! i'm also on board with Biron, providing he signs a reasonable contract. i'd rather Bouwmeester over Komisarek. that may mean moving some overpriced contracts, like Briere's contract, maybe in some package with Biron's rights.... the last things i want to say are about the Flyers need to cut out the penalties, and to take measures which strengthen their ability to overcome, what has been unfavorable officiating toward them. What urks me MOST about the NHL is the inconsistency in officiating, and how some teams like the Penguins and the Devils seem to always somehow receive favorable officiating, and teams like the Flyers always seem to get the short end of it. The Flyers could have EASILY won this series, had they receive a better shake from the officials. The Penguins are a DIVING team, who will resort to tactics of the lowest kind to draw penalties, and the league NEEDS to step up and start calling the unsportsmanlike penalty on teams like them... that is what urks me most about losing the series, the way it was officiated, and the way the DIVING (or other unsportsmanlike acts, like Stall's pulling Carter's stick into his waste) team won.

Really?? The Pens beat the Flyers because Richards and Carter didn't outplay Crosby and Malkin?? Two players with severely less talent didn't outplay their counterparts?? That sounds to me like an excuse for the fact that the team with the two less talented players couldn't overcome the talent deficiency.

Oh my... Three things can't be argued: 1. The better team won. The Pens have better talent, more team discipline and are better coached. 2. The Philadelphia press and Philadelphia fans like to make excuses. It's a bad habit. Read the Pittsburgh papers (online) after a loss; the focus is on our team's shortcomings, not the luck of the other. 3. Pittsburgh hockey fans and Philadelphia hockey fans share little in common. Pittsburgh Steeler fans and Philadelphia Eagle fans have a lot in common. The Pirates don't have enough serious fans to warrant a comparison with the Phillies. By the way, these comparisons are not flattering to Philadelphia hockey fans or Pittsburgh Steeler fans... I wouldn't hesitate to take my children to a Pen's game. However, I wouldn't take them to a Steeler's game for the same reasons I wouldn't take them to an Eagle's or Flyer's game. Bad behavior isn't tough to recognize. It isn't subjective. Comparing an isolated incident in Pittsburgh to chronically bad behavior is not a valid comparison. I've got a thought: Maybe Bobby Clark needs to go. Like they used to say about Chuck Noll, "maybe the game has passed him buy..."

In the 2009 season (including the playoffs) the Pens won 8 games vs 4 for the Flyers... that's double the wins folks...the Pens are the better team with the better players. Just the facts... Have a great off season thinking about that one.

game 1 Philly simply doesn't show up,maybe they were wondering why game 1 was in the BURGH.Game 2 Philly actually shows up and plays extremely well. However the horrible(all series)officiating calls Hal Gill for a ridiculous penalty.Common sense tells you(Knuble)theres going to be a make-up call coming. So knuble cross checks Orpik(who definetly embellished). Then for whatever reason Giroux two hands Kunitz. So now we are on the PP and Geurin ends it.Game 3 the flyers simply show why Philly is a hard place to place in.They dominated the game and despite Kunitz almost knocking off Timmo's head the pens just can't seem to get ahead.Game 4 Fleury just stands "on his head",and the pens win.Game 5 Biron plays his best game of the series and stops all 15 shots in the first period.Asham beats Fleury with a rocket, and the flyers play their best defensive game of the series. The result is a dominating win by the Flyers.Game 6 Philly up by 3,Max Talbot decides to try and make up for his first period turn over. After the game Talbot doing an interview with WPXI in Pittsbugh says he asked Carcillo to fight him.Carcillo seemed reluctant too do so,until according to Talbot "the whole Flyers bench told him to drop the gloves".Talbot changed the momentum by getting his a** beat. Then Pens then score. Then Mark Eaton doing what you should goes to the net and bats one out of the air. Then the kid does the same, and all of a sudden the rowdy Wachovia center becomes a funeral home. Then Gonchar delivers the dagger.Crosby finishes it with the empty netter, quieting the "Crosby s*cks" chanters.Philly's lack to score on the PP,and inability to win faceoffs I think was the big difference in this series.Trust me I'm from PGH,and really don't like the Flyers, but after seeing some of the comments they aren't getting a fair shake. They got plenty of calls through out the series but just couldn't seal the deal.A rugged D-man to slow us down and you might have won.

briere isnt going anywhere he has a no movement clause in his contract. he cannot be traded, waived, or bought out unless he gives his pernission. the deal is frontloaded to make a buyout later easier so good luck trying to find anyone to take him especially if the cap flat lines or goes down. good luck with the jaybo pipe dream and fitting him under the cap without gutting part of your team

Pens4Life - Was just about to congratulate your Pens for their resilience and pluck in a series full of energy and featuring two evenly matched - yes, evenly matched, d-bag - teams. But your classy comment about Pelle Lindbergh made me take notice, given how you corn-fed, white bread dorks complain about those big, mean Flyer fans. Coming from you, a laugh will do. Welcome back to hockey after years of Sega in the basement, when your team was a fixture in the league's basement. Keep living in a boring, second-class city, milk cows for your morning Cookie Crisp, and sport your Steelers jersey and finest pair of sweatpants while spending those Saturday nights at the bowling alley. End your night with your crew-cut, "big-boned" buddies feeding the bellies at the local Steak n' Shake while reviewing an evening once again wondering where the heck the girls hang out. Watching your teams is all "yins" have. Enjoy your simple life. Come hang in society some time. Good luck to those Buccos - they should contend this year in Triple-A.

This column should be called Broad Street Bull*hit. Stole the series? The Pens beat the Flyers TWICE on their ice you simp. The Flyers and their fans need to accept this fact: The Pens are BETTER. Since Crosby was drafted this "rivalry" has been very one sided. So continue with your ridiculous Crosby chants people, that's about all you have at this point.

Sam, There are no longer "crease-clearing" defensemen, the rules of "the new NHL" don't permit it. Today, you can't touch a guy in the crease unless or until he touches the puck, at which point frequently it's too late. That's why most teams place a premium on blocking passes intended for the crease area. This means that the most effective and desirable defensemen today have wing span and can skate (like Chara for instance). Derian Hatcher? Not under these new rules. The new rules are also the reason, as Pat Burns noted in a radio interview this past week, that teams can no longer effectively intimidate the opposition. Burns said the game's changed drastically and many coaches haven't adapted yet. Carcillo? 2 goals in 26 games and an ill-timed fight in the playoffs. Get rid of him.

Flyers won't win until they get a young PP QB defenseman a la Gonchar and an A1 goalie (Gee, where have we heard that before? Clarkie? Homer?) Richards stays. Briere and Gagne are pretty much untradeable due to salary and injury history. That leaves Carter and possibly Giroux ("a young Bobby Clarke" according to windbag Snider), Coburn, Lupul and JVR as trade bait. Go do your job Homer.

Worst collapse in sports since the '64 Phillies. Haven't the Flyers ever heard of "dump and chase"? Gotta wait another 6 months now to watch my Flyers, and hopefully see a new coach.

Great Series. All the Crosby Sucks chants are really making a difference, huh girls? Might want to take a page from the Book of Class and get back to supporting your own team and players instead of wasting air while screaming at "Public Enemy # 1" as your hometown cable channel, Versuckass, puts it. Crosby just gave you all cash money payback. Moving on in the next series is worth more than a late April tee time. BTW. Take a look at the stats of your top two lines for this series. That will tell the story. Jokes.

Hey yahmpy, speaking of Bouwmeester, have you ever actually watched him play? He's a good skater, and a pretty good offensive defensman (though definitely not in the NHL's top 10), but he's not much of a physical presence. Bouwmesster is definitely not tough. Komisarek's a 6'4" guy who plays small, an irritating hit-after-the-whistle type who seldom drops the gloves. Think Ulffie, think Claude Lemieux. They both played dirty, slew-foot, sneaky games, then turtled (for the most part) when they drove someone to the point of dropping his gloves. And when he does drop 'em, Komisarek's not a good fighter. Next.

I agree they missed Hatcher too Sam, although think I am in the miniroty..this does NOT come down to the goalie - ( you see his stats) nor to Stevens....you can't coach heart and that started w/ the loss to the Rangers..First Flyer fans blame Keenan that he was too much of a hockey nazi...waaa the coach is yelling at us - he gets the ax...NOW Stevens is too easy on them ???? These players are adults !! Not pee wee hockey players - man up and show some heart...and to the loss?? I blame the lawn cutting, tree cutting, gutter cleaners wife !!! We are celebrating the 3-0 lead - and SHE brings the HEX out - between HER and the refs, and lack of heart...we knew CIndy would make it to the second round...Good Night and Good Hockey !

OMIGODEAGLES, Perhaps the Pirates don't "play past September" but The City of Brotherly Hate has no pro sports being play when the Phillies are idle. You don't have the onions to admit it, but Sid the Kid cut your city's heart out with that empty netter! By the way, the Phillies WILL NOT repeat this year.

The positives from this year and series have been the emergence of Giroux, and Powe, making Briere even more expendable. Look for wholesale changes..Homer will try to move Briere, Lupul, Jones, Knuble will not be resigned (JVR can take his role). I wouldn't be averse to trading Gagne, while he still has value and can help bring in a goalie. And Homer must address the lapses and periods of complacency they showed all year during games...that falls on Stevens

Too bad there is not a stat for "soft" goals....Biron would lead that catagory hands down....Crosby and Malkin for all the skill they possess, still needed their goalie to carry them through this series. Pens will only go as far as Fluery will carry them...if he continues to play like he did this series, it will be all the way to the cup.

Both Richards and Carter did not play like they needed to. Gagne and Lupul were virtually invisible. Defence is slow and not very physical. Biron is a average NHL goaltender...tough to go far in the playoffs with an average goaltender. The series was a disappointment with the exception of the play of Claude Giroux.

The Flyers never play above their heads. They are probably the 5th or 6th best team in the league and will never beat anyone above them in games that count. The Penguins are just better. And why doesnt anyone talk about all of the mistakes Mike Richards makes on the ice and in the locker room?

The Flyers need a coach who will bring in a better defensive system. And a new goalie is needed.

The best team in this series did win. More than a few changes need to happen for the Flyers to be more competitive. Last year's playoff run now seem like a mirage. Let's start at the defense.... M. Carle was less than stellar and caused too many turnovers. Goaltending - Biron is what he is...... good but not a cup winning performer. Centers - I don't know the actual stats for faceoffs, but it seemed like the Pens won every faceoff in their defensive zone. Coaching - after 3 seasons and a first round defeat at home in a game won in the 1st period, upper management must address the lack of focus/intensity evident since after the all-star game. There are more than just a few problems with this team and if not addressed, we will see future seasons like the Clarke-GM era...... no cup here.

The Penguins did not 'steal' this series, they won it. In my years of watching sports, a sign of a good winning team is a team that can win even though they are not always playing their best and are off their 'game'. The Flyers were that type of team back in the 1970s when I first started going to hockey games to watch my Penguins. I have always enjoy the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh match-ups in any sport. I am glad to see it between the Flyers and Penguins. (I really miss the Phillies - Pirates match-ups that used to happen before the 3 division thing.)

Last year we had a great series against Washington and I found a new respect for brilliant #8. That guy plays with grit, heart, passion and boat load of skill to boot. He is definitely in BCW (Bathroom can wait category) - the goal the other night against the Rangers just proves my point. When you compare him to that whiny #87, there is just no comparison. This is not just sour grapes - now that the Flyers are done, I am actually hoping for Caps/Pens match so that I can see Ovie beat Cindy both physically and on the scoreboard....

Pens fans - why are you still here? Will you come back and post some more once you get thrashed by either NJ or Boston?

I agree with Sam that there needs to be a greater physical presence in the defensive zone, but I think more of it has to come from the forwards. There are too many forwards trying to play the puck instead of taking the body. Skilled players like Crosby and Malkin will expose that routinely. The problem with big, physical defensemen is that they are slow and get beat up ice for odd-man rushes. I just wish we could trade Briere and use his large salary on an elite goalie. Biron's performance reflects the rest of the team -- brilliant one minute and brutal the next.

This team just does not have the high-caliber talent to get into playoffs. They were never on even ground with the Pens. It always felt as if the Pens could score just about anytime they wanted...even when they were down three goals. Philly has always succeeded when there is that one marque player to build around. Ask yourself, who is that player on the flyers? Richards? Carter? Gagne? Briere? Giroux? No. These guys are all great players, but not Malkin/Crosby good. Sorry. It just seems there are a lot more Hextall/Clarke/Lindros jerseys in the crowd...still.

Please Flyer fans, please keep hurling insults and taunts at Crosby every time he enters your building. It is so classy and works like a charm every time! I guess you'll be seeing the number 87 in your dreams for a long long time! LOL

marty biron was not at fault for this series loss he played well enough for the flyers to win. saying the penguins stole the series is a bit of a reach since both teams were evenly matched. game one the flyers were outplayed along with stupid penalties. game 2 the flyers gave away with stupid penalties and spare me the whining gill had a crosscehck penalty in ot before thoe 2 calls that you could have won the game on. game 3 the pens got out played along with their own stupid penalties. game 4 fleury stole. game 5 brion stole the. game 6 was a train wreck for the flyers. why was carcillo fighting with his team up 3 goals and the game in hand? that was just plain stupidity on his part. john stevens is not the coach to take this team to the next level and should be removed. quite frankly stevens came off as a cry baby when he complained about the crosby goal then turned a blind eye as the flyers mowed fleury down through out the third period of game 4. you can't have it both ways john. even though dumping upshall was for salary reason that loss did hurt the flyers as he is 3 times the player carcillo will ever be.

Actually bill we just roll into baseball mode. We also don't think about the Flyers again until July 1 when FA begins and then forget about them again until November. I forgot Pittsburgh does have a baseball team too, but it never plays past September so who really cares.

i just want to go on the record now...before anybody in Philadelphia says,,,well, it's probably already been talked about,,,but,,,there is NO way that Carcillo totally destroying whoever that dude was from Pittsburgh right after the Flyers took a 3-0 lead made the Flyers lose...if so,,,then there could be job openings finally in the near future...i want a job as the guy who get's sent in to get his @&%# kicked...when the team is down and we need a momentum change, instead of working harder, finishing checks, winning individual battles, beating people to the puck,,,we'll send you in...you go out there and get your @&%# kicked,,,and then it's all over,,,we win!!!!!...I WANT THAT JOB...it'll hurt, but it pays well

How do you all like Sydney Crosby now? Cryer Fans. You got what you deserve. A long off-season to think about "who we can blame now".

They lost fair and square, better luck next year. The days of Bernie Parent, Bob Kelly, Reggie Leach, Dave Schultz, Rick MacLiesh, Ed Van Impe, etc. and the like this isn't.

The Flyers need to take a hard look at their coaching situation. There is a systemic problem with a team that 1) blows home ice by sleepwalking through the third period of their regular season finale 2)mails in their playoff opener and 3) virtually stops skating for large stretches of the final 35 minutes after building a 3-0 lead on home ice in an elimation game. The Flyers may well have lost to a better team in the Penguins, but a lack of preparation at key junctures made Pittsburgh's victory easier than it should have been.
