Parent to miss 6 more weeks; Pens next for 6th-seeded Flyers

Injury-plagued defenseman Ryan Parent will miss six weeks after undergoing back surgery Monday, the Flyers announced after Saturday's 4-2 win over Carolina.

Parent will have surgery to remove a disk fragment from his lumbar spine, GM Paul Holmgren said.

The surgery will be performed by Scott Rushton at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.

"After running the gamut with Ryan in terms of different things we have tried to relieve the discomfort, we felt this was the way to go for Ryan’s overall health," Holmgren said. "The surgery is minimally invasive."

Parent, 22, who is minus-5 this season, has missed the last 14 games. He has registered two assists and 14 penalty minutes in 28 appearances with the Flyers his season. Last year, he missed 36 games because of shoulder surgery.

On a day that marked the 10-year anniversary of his trade from the Flyers to Carolina, Rod Brind'Amour scored a goal against his ex-teammates Saturday.

But Brind'Amour wasn't celebrating after the game.

Instead, he was lamenting over a missed opportunity with 23 seconds left and the Hurricanes trailing, 3-2.

Brind'Amour was lone in front, but his shot was turned aside by quick-reacting goalie Ray Emery.

"I've got to put that one away," Brind'Amour said. "I couldn't get the puck up."

Other than a giveaway that gave Brind'Amour an earlier goal, Emery (33 saves) was superb.
