Giroux has concussion

Giroux has concussion
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Claude Giroux, who leads the NHL with 39 points, will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion, the Flyers announced.
"Claude reported not feeling very good today. Over the past few days, his symptoms have gradually gotten worse," GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement.
Holmgren contradicted the statement he realeased Monday, saying Giroux was "continuing to feel better."
Giroux was accidentally kneed to the back of the head by teammate Wayne Simmonds in Saturday's 5-2 win over Tampa Bay.
With Giroux sidelined, 19-year-old rookie Sean Couturier will get a chance to dispaly his offensive skills on the top line, centering Jaromir Jar and Scott Hartnell.
Giroux is the second Flyer with a concussion; Brayden Schenn also has one, and Chris Pronger is experiencing concussion-like symptoms. Pronger will be evaluated by two concussion doctors in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
Schenn was scheduled to skate after the regulars had a workout Tuesday morning at the Verizon Center. There is not timetable for his return.

The injury-plagued Flyers' five-game winning streak will be in severe jeopardy when they face Washington on Tuesday night at the Verizon Center.
The Flyers will be without their top offensive player, Giroux (39 points, best in NHL) and their best defender, Pronger.
Washington's Alex Ovechkin has 37 points (22 goals, 15 assist) in career 23 games against the Flyers. The Caps have won two straight.
This is the first meeting between the Eastern Conference rivals in D.C. this season. The Caps won at the WFC, 5-2, on Oct. 20. In that game, Ovechkin scored a pair of goals, and three of the Caps' goals deflected off a Flyer.
Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will start for the Flyers and face Tomas Vokoun. Bryz left Saturday's win over Tampa Bay with a lower-body injury, but practiced Monday.

you reporters are lousy the flyers lost 5-2 in october to the crapitals you bobo kyle856- Maybe that's why the column is called "Broad Street Bull." Half of what's in it IS "bull."
wmichael - Read carefully what's written...the first meeting between the eastern conference rivals >> IN << DC. ;}
mean mean pride, mean mean pride. - Aww... leave Kyle and WMichael alone. Reading comprehension isn't their strong suit. Maybe if we all pitched in and bought them "Hooked on Phonics" they might be able to read the Daily News without moving their lips in a year or two!
ItsMark - first game was at WFC, this is first game in DC... pay attention
recoveryroad - The article ORIGINALLY said it was the first meeting this year. After Sam was trounced by a number of comments (check the time of the comments), the article was corrected. This happens FREQUENTLY, as we are apparently the editors for Philly.com now.
I was thinking the same thing. I know we already played them this year. Ever since journalism (or lack thereof) went predominantly online, it seems like there is a total lack of fact checking. Especially in the sports section. Are these guys too underpaid to fact check, or just lazy or both? It's inexcusable. I have no training and could do a much better job. I have no doubt. Nichols1088- first game IN DC this year... pay attention

The Flyers played the Caps a little over a month ago. How does this guy continue to cover hockey? A year or 2 ago, he thought there were shootouts in the playoffs. Bundini25
How are the Flyers ever going to replace the goals from Carter and Richards? Jeff in Langhorne
If Wayne Simmonds didn't try to stupidly jump over Claude as he was getting up as opposed to simply skating around him, none of this would have happened. Wayne Simmonds single handedly may have ruined this potentially magical season, not to mention Grioux's shot at rising to NHL stardom. Go back to LA! shmu u 92- This is absolutely Simmonds fault. They teach you as a kid in any organized hockey league NEVER to try to jump over anyone, for OBVIOUS reasons - you have BLADES ON YOUR FEET! Simmonds proved he is a worthless wrecking ball and a fool. I hope they dump him ASAP. icarus
- That's what you get with Simmonds, complete moron with no hockey sense or any clue how to skate. He was already a liability to this team, now he's responsible for ruining a season.

I'll be at the game tonight. Looking forward to seeing how Couturier responds to being on the top line with the likes of Jagr & Hartnell. Can't wait to see his more offensive side. JimboECU
What a surprise! I dont think anyone thought he did not have a concussion we can only hope and pray he comes back soon and is ok. On a side note, why is that consussions in the NHL are so much worse than in NFL? I mean save for Aikman or Young, players in NFL seem to return rather quickly from concussions. Rodgers had two last year and hasnt suffered one since. shanehockey28
The way concussions are overblown in sports these days, any player with more than one concussion should kiss his career goodbye. GM's would be smart to keep concussed player contracts to less than 3 years. Crosby probably will call it a career, and certianly upon his next concussion he will. Insurance companies will stop providing protection for these contracts and teams will be screwed. LGbalsac
45 years in Chicago without a Flyers cup and this guy may have cost us what little chance we had...Wayne Simmonds can go back to la with all of the other under acheivers. ppetersen
Sports journalism in general is a joke. Most of us fans know more without a doubt. These guys just have command of the language, and ggod grammar that's all. Same stuff on TV, good public speakers. They were all just nerds in school and don't know much about playing. Blogs are way more insightful. Journalists are way more useful covering something like the Sandusky case or politics. They have a place, just not really in sports. I mean, how many dopes do we have covering the Eagles telling us what we already know or less when they could be breaking down how CEO's rape our wallets ? UnaBlogger
Does every flyer superstar have to get a concussion? Whenever the Flyers get a stud, he goes down (Lindbergh-by death, Lindros, Pronger, Giroux come to mind). Lindbergh would have won 2 or 3 cups, Lindros should have won 1 or 2 if he wasn't a head case other than concussed. It's like whenever a player gets hit in the head anymore it's a concussion. Very stupid of Simmonds to try and leap over his own teammate. Sad and frustrated. It was a treat watching Giroux play and now it back to muck and grind and wait for the lucky bounce. NHLfan
don't like to make the situation worse, but I don't know too many players that have had a concussion then went on to become the player they were. Scary, very scary! kevin44
Sorry, but the two deragatory comments about Wayne Simmonds are uncalled for here. The two of you didn't see the play, or haven't seen the replay, or you wouldn't be making such idiotic comments. Giroux went down right in front of Simmonds, one stride away. There was no chance for Simmonds to skate around him, he either jumps over him, or skates right into him. Blaming Simmonds for Claude's injury is like blaming the conductor when his train hits a car that's stalled on the tracks. fentonhardy- Right on !!!
mean mean pride, mean mean pride. - if you got the time to jump, you got the time to stop or turn
petemagoop - Wrong. Watch the replay on nhl.com.
fentonhardy - It must be really bad, if Giroux has been continuing to feel both better and worse since Saturday. Did Homer seriously have to flat-out lie about Giroux feeling better yesterday? Couldn't he have just declined to comment pending the evaluation? 1980
I wrote a few days ago "hope we won't be fed some day today prognostic, and out indefinitely in a few weeks" here we are, had a bad feeling about it,lets see who steps up .
Lets go Flyers !!! mean mean pride, mean mean pride.
One more year w/o a Cup. gl
We dont need old noodle (jello) brains. Remember when everybody use to say that about Lindros? neddyflanders
You need to actually read the article..the reporter said this is the first meeting "in" DC, not that it was the first meeting! peggymerchant
Saw the replay lots of times, played college hockey, there was time for him to go around Giroux. Simmonds could have given up on the play assuring Giroux's safety, after all, he wouldn't have caught them anyway. Protect your assets of which Simmonds is way down the line... ppetersen
You guys keep saying what a lousy reporter this guy is...but you are all idiots... Read it again... I know it's at a 5th grade level, which is tough for some of you bone heads... but he says..."This is the first meeting between the Eastern Conference rivals in D.C. this season". FIRST MEETING IN D.C. THIS SEASON! Not the first meeting between the two teams. He then goes on to say..."The Caps won at the WFC, 5-2, on Oct. 20. In that game, Ovechkin scored a pair of goals, and three of the Caps' goals deflected off a Flyer." You guys may even have some valid points, but when you make comments like that, you all look like dopes !
saxman1210- Hey tough guy, check the time of the comments you object to. The article ORIGINALLY said it was the first meeting of the season, and then was changed after several people pointed out that Sam was incorrect. That whole paragraph about Ovi's performance in the earlier game was not in the original posting of the article. The only real dope here is Sam and the "editors" or lack thereof at Philly.com. Sadly, this same pattern of incorrect information corrected by readers happens frequently. Maybe you want to retract calling the astute flyers fans on here idiots and dopes?
- Since the concussion issue has taken on more visibility, I wonder if the NHL is going to revise the checking and penalty rules even more over the blind side rule from last year? I sure hope that in 10 years from now, we do not have a sport that is non checking. I wonder if owners/coaches are being way more conservative or are there really more concussion injuries lately and why was it not a big deal 25 years ago?
- Players are bigger, the game is faster, the equipement much more harder, these players are wearing body armor literally,go to your local sports store, pick up an elbow pad
and tap yourself on the head with it, now imagine NHL speed,
size and lack of respect to the mixture, disastrous recipe
indeed... mean mean pride, mean mean pride. - They can change the rules all they want but it doesn't protect a player from his own teammate. I saw it happen first hand and Simmonds had time to divert his path. There was no reason for him to jump over Giroux. Herdman
No Giroux, no Pronger, Richards gone for Simmonds and Schenn. If these guys can pull it off, it would be the greatest Cup victory ever.
Giroux is why we completely changed our team, Simmonds may have ruined our entire year, unexceptable at any level for a life long Flyer's fan. ppetersen- Kiss the scoring title goodbye. brio
What's really weird is the descriptions from players like Pronger that he NEVER felt that bad before. So Giroux takes one knee to the back of the head and all of a sudden he feels terrible? Doesn't make sense. The impact of Simmonds knee could in no way be that much greater than tons of other hits people take. Sure, he is big and fast. But we're not talking about an MMA fighter or Kickboxer who has drilled kneeing techniques over and over. Are NHL players skaters that much harder? The math doesn't add up to produce players who feel so dizzy, lethargic, sick, and have headaches. MichaelZoe- It's not so much how hard a person is hit as to HOW he is hit. Simmonds hit Giroux from the back which caused his head to be snapped forward. The brain is jarred in the skull which caused the concussion. Herdman
Always great to be a Flyers fan, going back to the days of losing Parent to an eye injury and going with a backup goalie in the 76 finals, Kerr/Howe injuries in the 80s finals, Lindros concussions in the 90s, etc. Now Giroux and Pronger, our two best players, lost indefinitely. Truly, this franchise has bad karma. eagle1971
And, of course, Pelle. eagle1971
what a shame, to see a superstar in the making have his career just stopped and now it's done flyfightinbullies
He's done, trade Giroux asap, he is damaged goods! Trade Pronger as well
same thing. Go after Shea Weber NOW! larryv
All you morons blaming simmonds for this don't have a f'n clue. giroux fell right in front of him. it was an ACCIDENT! Old German- an avoidable accident
petemagoop
Yes, an accident, that could have been avoided. ppetersen
Comment removed.- Yeah, who would expect an NHL player to be able to hit the brakes and stop on a dime? That never happens. 1980
- Great plan, larryv. Who's going to take the calls from all of the GMs lining up to offer value for two guys who can't play because of concussions? 1980
It really sucks with all the players league wide being out because of concussion. WE all want to see everyone healthy and at their best.
It sucks that Crosby's out, and I don't care who you root for. This kid Giroux was off to a tremendous start. And lay of Simmonds. That's Bull. He plays hard every night. Let's string up Jimmy Watson for accidently poking Bernie in the eye. 164omw
i'll bet money that with G out Jagr takes his game to a another level mos19delta
Take your time with this injury Flyers. It is still very early in the season. ACBaughman
