On Brodeur, the series, the odds

POSTED: Saturday, April 28, 2012, 7:11 AM

Is New Jersey’s Marty Brodeur making his Final Tour?

Brodeur, arguably the best goalie in NHL history, will turn 40 during the Flyers-Devils series. He hasn’t said this will be his last season, but he hasn’t said it won’t be, either.

Brodeur was the difference in the Devils’ 3-2 double-overtime win over Florida in Game 7, and he is a player - make that a LEGEND - whom the Devills will rally around as the series takes shape.

For the Flyers, who had lots of success against Brodeur in the 2010 playoffs, the key is to do what they did in the quarterfinal series win against Pittsburgh: Traffic, traffic, traffic.

The Flyers attack in waves - does any remaining playoff team have four more dangerous lines? - so Brodeur and his defensive-minded team will have their hands full.

Pick: This will be a tougher series than a lot of people think. Flyers in six.

Your pick?

Breakaways. Against the Devils, Ilya Bryzgalov has allowed one goal on 76 shots…..Bovada in Las Vegas lists the Blues as the surprising Stanley Cup favorite at 15/4, followed by the Rangers and Flyers (both at 9/2) and Nashville (5/1), which lost its opener to Phoenix Friday in overtime…..The odds are 14/1 for a Stanley Cup Final between the Flyers and Flyers West (Los Angeles)…..According to TicketNetwork.com, the price range for tickets on the secondary market for Sunday’s Flyers-Devils opener is $106 to $238…..Flyers coach Peter Laviolette on the fierce rivalries in the East: “You could throw into a blender _ the Rangers, the Penguins, the Devils, the Flyers _ and pull out any two, and there’s something there, I think.” Add the Caps to that mix.....The Flyers will practice in Voorhees Saturday at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public....The Flyers will return home after each game in Newark and practice in Voorhees.

I saw Marty and spoke with him briefly in Tahoe last Summer. I asked him if he thought this was his last year. He said (paraphrasing) - I am going to do one more and insinuated that was it. I told him that we'll see him in Philly and to get ready. Couple laughs - pretty nice guy in person. Flyers in 5 - Devils struggled against a team that arguably could have missed the playoffs if WSH took the SE division and Buffalo one a game or two at the end. Flyers have to keep up the energy and I think they will score copious amounts of goals against NJ.

This will be an easy series..Flyers in 5. Brodeur is a shell of his past looks very average. The only thing that can stop the Flyers from winning the cup is fact they too have just an average goalie in BRYZ. It will have nothing to do with youth if they dont win. Does everyone realize that the Rangers-Kings and Blues all have teams younger then the FLyers??...The lack of a quality goalie after this series could be our downfall then its back to "IF WE ONLY HAD A GOALIE" ..I have little confidence in BRYZ.

Brodeur might have been the best ever, but these days he is pretty average, I mean what do you expect at his age playing so many games over his career. Force him to handle the puck, even though the announcers like to say how great he is at it (not as good as Hexy was) he makes poor decisions more often then not.

Stop being so down on Bryz. His Games 5-6 performance gave plenty of reason for optimism. In the beginning of the 3rd period of Game 5 he kept them in the game before the Flyers poured it on and almost tied it. He was everything we needed him to be in Game 6.

I think it just depends on which Flyers team skates out there. If it's the team with a desperate sense of defensive responsibility that gave Bryzgalov all of the help he could want and more in game 6 against Pittsburgh, I think the Flyers steamroll the Devils. If it's the team in the first 4 games that gave the goaltender no help at all, I think they could struggle and even lose against Jersey. My best bet is that they're more the former than the latter, and the Flyers win it in 6.

Not worried in the slightest against NJ even the Bryz we saw for 80% of the season can get us past NJ...Its after that...Rangers in finals and any team in West clearly have stud goalies to our Moon Man

Eaglejay: "Brodeur owns the Flyers"? Did you sleep in a time machine last night? Are you in the 1990s? Come back to 2012. Martin Broduer owns plenty of NHL records, a sweet bank account, and from what I hear, his sister-in-law, but NOT the Flyers...Get your head in the game...

No. Brodeur is a Hall of Famer and Bryz is not, but Brodeur's best playoffs are WAAAAY behind him and Bryz is playing much better now than during the season, Game 4 vs. Pens notwithstanding. When it comes to goaltenders, it's the Devils fans that have more to worry about than we do.
