LOS ANGELES _ The Flyers have been given permission to talk with the agent for San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov and try to make a deal before the free-agency period starts on Thursday.

But a soucre close to the situation said he was "not optimistic" that a deal could be reached prior to Thursday.

In other words, Nabokov is expected to test the free-agent waters, and the Flyers will be among a handful of suitors.

If the Flyers do sign Nabokov before Thursday, they would probably have to give San Jose a late pick in the 2011 draft. The source said no compensation has been decided upon, and he denied an Internet report that the Flyers would give a seventh-round pick if they signed Nabokov prior to Thursday.

Yes...we have a 'backup goalie'...however, Nabakov is NOT the answer unless we can get him cheap and for a short term...2 years max.

Mixed emotions on Nabakov.....he's better than what we have now, but it continues the trend of getting aging goalies beyong their prime. The Flyers are notorious for grabbing over the hill goalies like Beezer, Hackett, Cechmanek.....is Nabokov better than that???

There isn't any reasonable way to sign him before July 1st. One of the keys to the Flyers' interest is signing him to an "over 35" contract that can be a low cap hit with non-cap incentives. However he doesn't turn 35 until July 25th. This is gonna drag even if they reach a deal in principle.

Hey, the economy isn't that great. These guys should be happy to get what they get, like the rest of us. Be happy you're employed.

Really. This is the NHL, there is a salary cap. There are too many teams in the NHL. the league may be looking at contraction in the near future.
