Most fans blame NHL owners

POSTED: Sunday, September 16, 2012, 10:01 AM

Responding to an unscientific poll I created on Twitter, an overwhelming majority of fans think the owners deserve most of the blame for the NHL’s third lockout since Gary Bettman became commissioner in 1993.

Several fans called the owners “hypocrites” for saying the players need to take substantial pay cuts - after offering mega-million deals to the same players.

Tweeted McCaffreyDave: why are owners handing out contracts they are fighting to get rid of? #confused

Bsculls had the same theme, saying “what the owners are doing by signing these contracts proves that the rat in this is bettman.”

Tweeted Mamaflyers571: owners should get blame. They want CBA they forced abolished. And are rushing to sign guys right now under this 'bad' CBA

The owners did get some support.

Tweeted Drewlogue: EZ to say owners fault; in what other job do employees get >50% of rev?” it's called a co-op; many work places have this.

MarkHritz tweeted that BOTH sides are to blame. “neither are right. split everything 50/50. Players need owners & owners need players.”

Here are some other responses:

TotesMcquotes: My 2yo daughter gets so excited when #Flyers are on TV. "Look Dad! Claude Giroux!" Not this yr. Thanks #Bettman

Frstrm33: The players (are right) The #NHL is trying again to fleece them because of bettman's ill advised expansion plan.

Tattered666: this time it’s the players (who are right). They gave the league everything last time under the promise it fixed all the woes. Now you have teams like Minnesota handing out 2 10yr $98mill contracts. They made their bed now lie in it.

schman_317: we've instituted a 2 year ban in our house. No ticket or merchandise purchases. #notgettingmymoney

And your feelings on the latest lockout?

It is really a shame but it's all greed driven. Why are there teams in places that can't support them? The NHL wants the tv revenue from these large population centers but when it fails (sometimes more than once, Atlanta)the league foots the bill (Phoenix.)

Hmmm. Are we going to get a fair picture on any labor negotiations from a loyal member of the Newspaper Guild as it faces inevitable major concessions in its current contract negotiations with a failing newspaper?

schman_317 has the right idea. Fans need to not only boycott the sport for a season, or two, but also contact the sponsors (via e-mail, or twitter, or facebook, or...) both local and national and let them know that you will not purchase their products/services for a year or two. BE SURE TO COPY YOUR TEAMS GM AND NHL COMMISSIONER, GARY BETTMAN, ON YOUR MESSAGES TO THE SPONSORS.

In follwoing with my previous post, go to: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=75916 and join me in letting these corporate sponsors know that you will not purchase their products/services if the 2012 - 2013 NHL season does not begin on Thursday, 10/11/2012.

Owners like Snider who offer 100 million dollar contracts to Free Agents and then cry poor mouth, don't deserve Hockey. I hope they all play in Europe this season! Go buy another Basketball team, Ed, so they can stink forever, under your dazzling leadership! Funny how the new Sixer's owner turned that program around in less than 6 months!

Will the real Ed Snider stand up? The one who wants to line his pockets or the one who is building rinks. Crying poor when the Phantoms will move into a $200 Million + arena . Its the suits who have ruined hockey, ask the Maple Leaf fans , bottom line , more money, more money ,MORE money

Um, Snider/Comcast sold the Phantoms to an independent group. That group secured the financing and zoning rights to build a new arena in Allentown. The Phantoms remain the Flyers primary minor league affiliate but that is the extent of their business connection and has been pretty much since the Spectrum closed.

No doubt this lockout is totally blame on the owners. The players totally crumbled and conceded the last time and the owners are trying for another home run. No matter what they get from the players they'll not lower any prices for fans, not provide any benefits to anyone but themselves, and they'll cry that they need more. Don't mis-read me, I've worked in private industry my whole life, in general am conservative, but there's just no argument to make the owners look good. Either they are just trying to bilk everyone again, or they are complete morons who totally won the last lock-out and still forced a deal on the players that wasn't one they could rake in the $ with. I don't think they're complete morons, so it must be the "bilk" argument.

The owners need to be protected from themselves? The NHL is done in my house. Good riddance.

2 words to consider: Donald Fehr. The Marvin Miller acolyte who ruined a World Series amongst other baseball stoppages. Just something to consider as all of you well know he is the NHL platers union head now......
