McGinn looks like keeper
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
WINNIPEG _ The Flyers have uncovered a little-heralded player who looks like a keeper.
Left winger Tye McGinn continued his impressive play Tuesday as he scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the Flyers' 3-2 victory in Winnipeg.
When Scott Hartnell returns from a broken foot in a couple weeks, there's no way the Flyers should send McGinn back to the AHL Phantoms.
The kid belongs in the NHL.
McGinn, a 6-foot-2, 205-pounder who was a fourth-round draft pick in 2010, has the size of former Flyer James van Riemsdyk. He can't match van Riemsdyk’s speed, but he plays a more physical game. He's adept at winning board battles, and he drops the gloves when need be. (See his winning bout against Mark Stuart on Tuesday.)
“I just try to do my best out there,” McGinn said. “Take every game like it’s my last and work hard out there. It’s the NHL, so you can’t get too comfortable at any time. You’ve just got to keep working hard and take each shift like it’s your last.”
In the win over the Jets, the newly formed trio of Brayden Schenn (goal), Jake Voracek (two assists) and McGinn (goal) was the Flyers’ best line.
By far.
They were a combined plus-5.
“We have a little chemistry going and know where we’re going to be in the offensive zone, and I think it’s a big advantage,” said Vorackek, who had his best game of the season. “….Both (of his linemates) are big bodies and I got a little more room.”
Since being recalled from the Phantoms, McGinn, 22, has five points, including three goals, in 11 games and is plus-3.
“He’s been such a nice addition to our lineup,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “He’s big, he’s strong, he finishes his checks. He fights once in a while, scores goals, sticks up for his teammates – all things you look for when a player is coming up. Positive contributions to our lineup, and it’s not just the goals; it’s the fact he gets pucks out on the walls. He does a lot of nice little things out there that have really made him fit in.”
Breakaways. Winger Jody Shelley was put on IR and may need hip surgery….Voracek has seven points in his last six games…..Luke Schenn had seven hits, giving him 55 in 14 games……The Flyers have killed 28 of their last 30 penalties (93.3 percent)…..Next stop: Newark, where the Flyers play the Devils on Friday.

Keeper!

Possibly this season's "Matt Read" ... little heralded young player who makes an impact. Nice. FishFryFrank
Voracek needs to play on a line with someone whose actions on the ice constantly remind that hockey is a physical game. The Flyers still need another consistent goal scorer. Haven't checked lately on their status but Petr Sykora or Daymond Langkow are free agents who could fill the bill. This team lacks scoring depth. They're minus Jagr and JVR and plus McGinn. Doesn't take a genius to note they're putting pressure on young players to score in the NHL beyond what they've shown they're capable of. Claudio Vernight- McGinn buckled Stuarts legs with that right hook!
He's a perfectly acceptable 3rd/4th liner. Good for McGinn, but he's nothing to get TOO excited about. Wrack
Looks good so far but lets not get to overhyped...Lots of people had Schenn and Couts going to the Hall Of Fame last year and they look like average players at best this year...kreider looked like a superstar in the making for Rangers last year and this year just cracked the lineup 3 games ago flyers1000
Why would you even think he'll be returned to the Phantoms after Hartnell returns? Sam, get a clue. BobbyD- Thanks Homey.
Jagr and JVR were keepers that Holmgren now regrets not keeping. The Flyers, especially Giroux, really miss them in road games where the home teams get the last line changes. farley
He'd score 11 goals in a full season. As good as Craig Berube or Dave Hoyda. FlyersLosersFor38Years
Great..plays a decent game and now a hero in flyers minds...that is why you are all morons....keep it up Ed, I guess you are smarter than everyone else...hah! Friend to All
Maybe by letting McGinn play in the low pressure minor leagues until age 22 he was able to develop his game. Over the years, the Flyers have rushed too many players under 21 into the NHL only to trade them when they don't meet unrealistic expectations. zeke128
Flyers1000, don't be a d***che. Nitroglycerin
Agree with Zeke - the development aspect is huge. Flyer1000 - why so negative all the time bro?? Lighten up some and just enjoy the game will ya??? OnlyTheLordSavesMore
