Chicago Tribune depicts Pronger as a woman

POSTED: Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 2:16 PM
The Chicago Tribune published this poster of Chris Pronger today.

Who wears the skirt for the Blackhawks?
Dustin Byfuglien
Ben Eager
Duncan Keith
Antti Niemi

The Chicago Tribune depicted Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger as a woman, calling him "Chrissy Pronger" in its cover story Tuesday and putting a skirt on him in a photo.

Pronger said he hadn't seen the photo.

"I really couldn't care, to be honest with you," Pronger said. "I'm worried about playing the game."

Pronger was a career-worst minus-5 in Game 5; before that, he was the best player in the Finals.

    Here is the link.

Goalie Michael Leighton will start Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals against Chicago on Wednesday, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette indirectly announced.

Leighton, who had three shutouts in the conference finals, leads the NHL with a 2.34 GAA in the playoffs, but he has struggled in the Finals (4.01 GAA; .864 save percentage).

But with Brian Boucher not fully recoverd from knee injuries, it's the right choice.....the only choice.

The Flyers will host a free pep rally outside the Wachovia Center on Wednesday from noon until 2 p.m. In addition to Flyers Alumni appearances and free hot dogs, Flyers fans can pose for photos with the Prince of Wales Trophy.

Wow...had quite an effect on the game didn't it!?!? Those Flyers and Pronger came out with anger and wrath as they got totally outplayed in the 1st period and most of the night. When are you mopes going to figure out that side shows like this don't decide games at this level....players and talent do.

Oh please, I don't think the Hawks are afraid of big, slow, dorky Chris Pronger. If the refs bother to enforce the rules, he'll be sitting in the penalty box. The guy would be nothing without all his interfering, hooking, slashing and cross-checking. How macho!

Who cares? I don't think it's all that funny, but it's far from offensive. If Chris Pronger or anyone in that locker room needs this to motivate them tonight... Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals... then, they don't deserve to be on the ice.

He got everything he deserved and more in game 5! You will not win and the worst thing that could of happeded was getting BIG BUFF TOEWS AND KANE GOING LAST GAME!

Now if you're a professional athlete playing in your sports championship, do you really need any additional motivation? If Pronger needs this to motivate him, the Flyers are in trouble.

The picture served its purpose. It created some controversy. It is like talk radio and rag newspapers. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. And this comes from the same people that trash the Philly fans. Kind of hypocritical don't you think?

Oh good the game is in Philly tonight - at least I'll be able to hear God Bless America instead of the National anthem. Oh wait, I couldn't hear the anthem in Chicago either cause all the classless fans show no respect and clap over the whole song. You reap what you sow. You've already started building a Stanley Cup memorial, you post this picture of the player who has singlehandedly forced your team to shake up its lines. And you seem to think you are entitled because this is the first year you actually started going to Blackhawks games. HAHAA. Game 7 is on June 11. 611 = Broad Street and that is where we will be partying Friday night after we thump Chicago tonight.

Lost in all the false angst over a hilarious Photoshop paste up is what's written in the last 'puck- "100% chance we'll change our minds if the Hawks sign him." Hawk fans may not like the guy but they respect his abilities, I would even argue that we're more familiar with his game than you are (remember he played for the Blues..). Personally, I would have put Carcillo in a Tutu, it would be an improvement.

Nice legs Prongs. Everybody on the squad should come out of the closet like he did and consider the new team name, The Fabulous Flyers. He'll probably pull a Tanya Harding when the going gets rough though. Or lay low like he did in Game 5.

Wow, first New York puts Victorino in a skirt, and now Chicago with Pronger..what is it with the insecurity of these "larger" cities? Typically wanting to see men in skirts means you might have issues of your own to deal with. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

First, CHITOWNGREAT is obviously 7 years old. Chi had the 3rd best record (Washington had 1st, then San Jose). Second, he is a perfect example of why the citiznes of Chicago continuously vote criminals and corrupt officials into office in that city. The intelligence in that city is obviously a little to low to see that when the politicians are shaking your hand, they are using their other hand to pick your pocket.

Too funny that they consider Pronger to play like a figure skater - what series have they been watching??? "Chrissy"??? This from a team of Blackhawks that go by "Jonathan", "Patrick" (x 2), "Dustin", "Kris", "Duncan", and my favortie "Marian(ne)". If you say them with a lisp, you'll get my point. "Jonathan, pass it to Patrick!"

Another example of why Chicago will always been known as the Second City. Last fall the NY Post ran a mock-up photo of Shane Victorino in a skirt during the World Series. Chicagoans, unable to come up with any ideas of their own, simply got the idea from someone else.

I quoth Steve Langford from Howard 100 News (the only respectable news organization left in this country): "WGAS, WGAF?" This is nothing but bush-league psyche-out b*u*l*l (C)hit from a two-bit paper in a one-horse town that has always copy-catted everything it has called its own from other great American and Old World cities, even big fires. Perhaps it's time for another great conflagration, even it will only be in spirit and not in actuality. It'll be like a high colonic for this country as a whole. And I'm willing to be the one who will break the lantern this time.

As a 'Hawks fan I am embarrassed that the Trib ran this. Although I do think it is funny, it was way inappropriate for a mainstream paper to run. It was more appropriate for the chicago site "the heckler" to run. This has been a great series to watch. It has been a lot of fun. Now it has gotten a little out of hand. You poll shows that Buffy wears a skirt for the 'Hawks, I believe it was Kane until game 5. Good Luck to you guys, but obviously, I hope you lose. But either way, both team have played hard and who ever wins it all will have earned it.

One other thing NiemiNoNo, (whatever the hell that means), you're right, the battery throwing thing at JD Drew was bad, but how do you explain a 20 year old girl PICKING HER NOSE, and wiping it on a picture of Kate Smith during Sunday's game? Yes, I said a "girl". Does this type of behavior pass for fan class in Chicago these days? If so, then her and the boy who ganged up w/ his Dad to jump an elderly man from behind on the baseball field should get together and start their own Fan Club.

And as far as "the shell" jman is speaking of, he is talking about the shell Biff has been in during this series. Yeah, he made an appearance last game when Pronger wasn't on the ice to shut him down, but we have the last line change for this game, and your Coach will not be able to hide Biff from Pronger again. Hence, Biff goes back in his "shell" for Game 6.

NiemiNoNo, 17 goals in the regular season? I was under the impression that we were talking about the CURRENT SERIES. The one that was prefaced by the national media setting it up as a grudge match between Pronger and Bufflin, in which Pronger (and the Flyers) succeeded in shutting down Bufflin (as well as Kane and Toews) for the first 4 games. What do regular season stats have to do with any of this?

Well NiemiNoNo, we do agree on one thing, what a joke "the trib" is. But seriously, like I already stated, I'm not concerned about the Flyers game right now. Not the defense, not the goaltending, not anything. I have full confidence that the Fly Guys bring their 'A' game tomorrow, and then regroup for Game 7 in Chicago...If that is the Hawks "best", then they're in for a long night Wednesday because that was the Flyers' absolute worst, and they still had their shots to come back in Gm 5. But what's done is done. As for Game 6, "Can't wait"...LET'S GO FLYERS!!!!

Jman - Buff had 17 goals in the regular season. You obviously don't watch hockey much. He is in and out of "his shell" all season. Chrissy can focus everything he can on Buff and let the rest of the team get it done. Pray the refs call it in favor of the Flyers. I'm not crying about penalties but they aren't even this series. If the Hawks pp cranks up you are done by the 2nd period.

jman, acutally we wouldnt be in the playoffs if it werent for Boucher making a historic save to extend our season. But, you wouldnt know that because your narrow mind is focused on not falling of the bandwagon. Nevertheless, if the Flyers pull through this I will be happy. If they dont, life goes on. Some of you people take this stuff wayyyyyyy to personally. Either way, no fan on this board has any influence on the outcome of the game so all of your words are moot. Just let the game be played and see what happens. So what do the fans actually get out of winning a Stanley Cup? Thats what I thought too.

"Onslaught"? What onslaught? The Hawks only outplayed the Flyers in one game. All others were fairly even, with each team winning 2. That's hardly an onslaught. Pronger rarely has back-to-back off-games, which spells trouble for the Hawks, as Bufflin will no doubt go back into his shell.

Phillygoon - Strong words from a guy living in a town known for throwing "D" cell batteries at opposing players. We could go on and on. All I'm saying is this year - Hawks are the better team. If Chrissy plays his best ever it won't be enough to stop the onslaught.

It's funny how Pronger was this big bully the entire series, then he has one bad game and suddenly he's a sissy. After seeing that picture I would not want to be wearing any color but orange the next 2 games. Any bets on how many heads Pronger takes off Wed night? Thanks for the extra motivation, Chicago. There's nothing sweeter than skating the Cup on the other team's ice to a soundtrack of boos. We're looking forward to it. Flyers in 7!

I could see the Dn doing the same thing. This paper, like our DN, is a rag. A half step above the National Enquirer is all each are. That said, it is curious why they'd do that that. Pronger had an off game in game 5. He did well in the others. Do they think this'll make him repeat Game 5? If I were a Chicago forward like Kane, I'd be ticked. Pronger is going head hunting and he should.

Reality Speaks - I could care less about the tribs picture. I didn't put it in the paper. It did make me laugh tho. Seriously, be concerned with your defense and goaltending. If you watch hockey other than the flyers, you know that the real hawks played in game 5. You are lucky you won 2 at this point. Better luck next year.

St.Patrick33, Instead of worrying about the 1974 Flyers fans' behavior (which by the way, was THIRTEEN YEARS more recent since the blackhawks won anything), you should be wondering why Bufflin has only showed up for one of the five games played so far. (Wait, I think it's because Pronger SHUT HIM DOWN for all those games!)

More bulletin board material from an inferior chi-town rag paper. Ain't worth the fish wrappings it should be instead. This will only make it sweeter when Mike Richards takes the Cup from Herr Bettman Friday night on chi-town rag ice, while Eddie O comsoles Johnnyboy Toews and Pattygirl Kane, and St.Patrick33 lovingly follows behind carrying all their jocks. Game On.

I love how for idiot Flyers fans this is more important to them than what is actually going on the ice. Both Flyers goaltenders were terrible in the last game.....and Carter is nowhere to be found. Somehow, it's all because of the Trib. Flyers fans truly are an embarassement to all of hockey. It was true back in 74 and it hasn't changed one iota.

NiemiNoNo, "upset about a picture in a newspaper" and "worry about losing game 6" are the wrong assessments. First, about the picture, the city and the fans are just amazed that this type of child's play appears in a major city's newspaper, again and again and again. Although it's not even original, it is enjoyable. So keep 'em coming. As for the worrying part about Game 6, well there is no worry. I think we're all confident that the Flyers go out on Wednesday night and tie this thing up. They've proven they got what it takes, and am looking forward to it.

I think Chicago fans laughed for about 5 seconds before realizing that the Tribune just yanked the Cup from underneath them and handed it to the Flyers. The Flyers are a very good team and you just handed them the ammo. The Flyers parade will start down Michigan Avenue and, after a brief interruption, continue down Broad Street in Philly. Feel the dagger.

Wow, your team is potentially 1 game from hoisting the Stanley Cup and the entire city is still focused on 1 player. You would think they would be praising their heroes, but nope you're just playing in Pronger's game right where he wants you. I'll just say thank you, I would much rather have the "media" showing it's anti-gay colors than have them focusing on the Flyers terrible play in Game 5. Makes the Flyers job of forgetting about that game so much easier. Definitely will make Pronger hoisting the cup after Game 7 in Sickago that much funnier.

cheezsteak, when the games are played in Philly and Lavvy can dictate the lines better, it's a much closer matchup on paper. But they play on ice and at the level of play these guys are playing at, I do think that some of the talent differential can be made up through emotional play and intelligent game-planning. I agree that Chicago is stacked with talent, but sometimes the edge needed to win comes from somewhere other than talent, and they may have just stoked that fire when they shouldn't have.

Gotta throw this in- Besides just this Chicago Tribune stunt, the Chicago media has been a revelation to me, and in a bad way. Of course everyone has heard about the reputation of the Philly media being relentless and negative at times, but for this series, the Philly media has been head and shoulders above the Chicago media in the integrity and insight of their coverage. Not to badmouth all the press back in Chicago, but some of the drivel coming from there is the stuff of jealous teenage girls.

First a Chicago investigative journalist dressing as a Flyers fan goes undercover, then CSN Hawktalk website talks trash with every blog post, another article is published by some unknown radio host trashing the City as a whole, and now this? What is wrong with the Chicago media? Are they that bored out there in the midwest that they talk about everything but hockey? I have to commend the Inquirer and especially the Daily News for publishing quality articles, both professional and insightful. The Flyers need to put these trash talking hawks in their place.

Some out-of-town rag did the same thing with Victorino in 2008. Even though some fans can be lunatics, don't the official "publications" at least TRY to take the high road (and leave the ridiculous extremes to the fans)?

Chicago Tribune and Pres Obama...perfect together (and classless too).

What a bunch of Buff droppings! The game will be decided on the ice, not in a pull-out of the Chicago Tribune. What a rag! If the Flyers need this for motivation, they're in the wrong business. Seems to me to be a great example of Chi-town whistling past the graveyard. I guess some people have never heard of the old saying, "Let a sleeping Pronger lie!"

Pretty lame. I'm glad Philly papers don't bother with that junk.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... who cares!? Daily News, please don't get sucked into it like you did last year when NY did that to Victorino. Just let Chicago wallow in their unoriginality. Game 6: Flyers 4, Chicago 1. Game 7: Flyers 4, Chicago, 3. Parade.

Theuy're not even original. They're just copying the Craigslist Ad that was posted both her and in Chicago stating that "Dustin Byfligen's manhood for sale, was found in a dumpster at the Wachovia Center after it was taken by Chris Pronger." Now that was funny, this is just nonsense(like everything I've seen come out of Chicago. You would thing a city like that would have better journalists.) I love Philly so much more after being exposed to hacks like this.

Wow. Now, if Chicago doesn't win it, they will remember this as the jinx in Chicago like Bartman for the Cubs. I'd bet the Blackhawk players wished this hadn't happened.

I don't care. I used to like sports, but since ESPN it's who can talk the most trash, and who can pee the farthest. What would happen if they were playing against Steve Avery? Chris Pronger is no doubt an instant HOF'er.

Wow, they managed to make the Daily news look like serious journalism!
