Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said his relationship with colorful goalie Ilya Bryzgalov is a work in progress.

You might recall he said something similar about his rapport with since-traded captain Mike Richards last season.

Don’t jump to the wrong conclusion, Laviolette said after the Flyers practiced in Voorhees on Monday. He hinted the comments about Richards were misconstrued, and that he gets along fine with Bryzgalov.

“I have a good relationship with Bryz,” said Laviolette, whose team has lost five of its last six games. “We continue to work on that. That should not be construed in a negative way. But we continue to work on it. He’s a new player. I’m a new coach. Like a lot of the guys in here, it takes time to develop those relationships. My relationship with Bryz is good.”

The Flyers need their fiery coach and their inconsistent goalie on the same page as they head down the stretch and try to regroup and secure a high seeding in the Eastern Conference.

Bryzgalov, who signed a nine-year $51 million contract before the season, has just a 2.78 goals-against average and .900 save percentage, but he had been showing signs of snapping out of his funk. He had allowed just a total six goals over his last four games before being sidelined by the flu.

After missing the last three games, Bryzgalov was back at practice Monday and said he was ready to return to action. The Flyers will host Buffalo on Thursday, and Bryzgalov figures to get the start.

Columbus’ Rick Nash ($7.8 million cap hit) has apparently agreed to waive his no-trade clause.

The Flyers have about $4.7 million in cap room and would have to deal some salary to add the star winger.

Also, Washington winger Mike Knuble (three goals, minus-14), a former Flyer who has a $2 million cap hit, implied he wants to be dealt. He has been a healthy scratch lately.

Interesting that Lavy used those same words about Bry.... Well he is stuck with him for 9 years or as long as Lavy is the coach. We need our D-MAN to start playing with an edge and soon. Pronger wouldn't be back this season and who knows if he will be able to come back at all so who we have now need to step up their game every game they play from now till the end of the season. if not it is going to be a very long summer...

Lavy said the same thing about Jagr recently. I wouldn't draw any conclusions, it seems to be Lavy's standby way of talking about his players.

lav is too much of a hot head. he thinks yelling and screaming actually works with todays players. he goes and benches the new franchise goalie in the winter classic, one of the biggest regular season games in flyer history. how did he think the russian would respond???

Winger? No. Get a veteran defenseman who is NOT a turnover machine named "Carle" and doesn't need Chris Pronger to hold his hand to be able to play in this league. Matt Carles decision making on the ice is similar to Andy Reids during game time: the decisions made during play DO NOT HELP THE TEAM!!!!!

Everyone needs to relax. This is a young solid team. This isn't their year. Any playoff wins this season is icing on the cake. Get a solid D-man in here without trading the farm and then we'll talk.

Yo, rage- I wouldn't say that they're "solid"- young, yes, but definitely not solid.

I don't care what Kunble's +/- is...bring him back. He always contributed to the team effort and is a stand-up guy. He would do well with the Flyboys.

Defense and goaltending win hockey games. from the midgets up to the pros, it's all about the 'd". Flyers need both, won't go far without.

What a stupid suggestion. Get another forward? Yes our glaring deficiency is our goal scoring ability... I swear sometimes it's like they have a dart board with stupid ideas on it and whatever hits makes it to the website

Thanks Rage, you're correct. It's a good solid young team. 4th in the conference says that. Definitely solid.

Way to go Carchidi. Trying to create another locker room problem. Why don't you guys focus on the games and leave Bryz alone. You won't be happy until you've run this guy out of town! And 420Phillie, yeah yelling doesn't work. Did you see 24/7? How are the Rangers doing this year under Torts?
