Lavvy gets tough; Emery surgery a success
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Partly as punishment for the nine penalties they committed Tuesday, new Flyers coach Peter Laviolette put his players through a tough practice Wednesday that included extra skating drills.
Laviolette said he wants the players to be accountable for their actions.
The Flyers, coming off a 6-2 win over the Islanders, host Ottawa Thursday.

Goalie Ray Emery had successful abdominal surgery Wednesday and is still expected to miss six weeks, GM Paul Holmgren said.
According to Holmgren, Dr. William Meyers repaired "a significant tear of his rectus abdominus on the left side of his lower stomach." The operation was performed at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Emery will be released later Wednesday and initiate his rehab Thursday, the GM said.
Brian Boucher (2.53 GAA, .903 save percentage) has become the Flyers' No. 1 goalie _ and said he is excited by the challenge.
Hey Snakeman - If you honestly believe that a deal that involves like Upshall and Carcillo will go down as the worst trade in Flyers history, then you have absolutely no right even owning a TV, Radio, Computer. You must be cut off from all things Flyers in perpetuity. No one, and I mean NO ONE will remember Upshall or Carcillo once their playing days are over. I would say that trading away Forsberg, 12 draft picks, a new Toyota Camry, Hextall, Duschesne, Ricci, Huffman and $5 million in cash for Lindros might sting a bit more than losing a pretty boy who liked to party more than play. For the life of me, I will never fully understand what people's affinity to Upshall is. He's good looking, great. Get over it. Looks don't win hockey games. Ask Lappy. AndrewB55
Talk about penalties, How did the Islanders get a pp when Tavares crossed checked Hartnell into Biron? I guess Tavares is the next face of the NHL. And Tavares didn't even get a penalty. We did!! To all who think Carcillo should not play-- You know nothing about hockey. Has anyone of you played organized hockey in your life? Do you know what it takes to make up a team? If the Flyers would have been winning and Carcillo still does what he does, would anybody notice? Iceman65
Andrew: "For the life of me, I will never fully understand what people's affinity to Upshall is." You beat me right to the punch! ha. For the love of god, he was a decent 3rd line player! He brought energy, but so does Carcillo. The trade was not about Carcillo, it was about making cap room to get Giroux onto the team! BTW...Upshall has 13 pts so far - less than 3 of our defenesman (Carle, Timmonen, and Pronger). Please get a new man crush snakeman! Dzog
Holmgren trades away draft picks (1st & 2nd rounders) like they grow on trees or something. I agree, the Upshall & 2nd rounder was horrendous, but so was trading a 1st rounder for Eminger. They couldn't rid of him fast enough. I wish some team would trade us their 1st round pick for our 7th defenseman. Good luck with that happening anytime soon. BobbyD
Snakeman - I disagree with you. Worst trade of all time? Carcillo and Upshall are middle of the pack guys. Carcillo is a good player - a guy that every team loves to have, but hates to play against. Did Scottie Upshall really bring that much to the game that he is missed so much? TheMan
Oh,Jeez, The guy just got the job. Wait for at least a month before we start bi*ching and moaning about the team. Think positive. Hatfield_ham
cnova000, you are so right. he is a useless cement head not worth of an echl tryout. i am so glad they traded upshall for him. at least the guys dont stay out too late with scotty anymore!!! egmetzjr
I say the Lindros trade was worse. P Even
Dan Carcillo should be waived or traded upon completion of his 4 game suspension. There are other guys out there that can be physical and bang and provide jump that have half a brain. JSaq

Comment removed.- cnova...you're completely clueless. If you think the other team isn't already motivated in a playoff game, you must be a basketball fan. The guy has been great this season on the 4th line. High energy, wearing opponents down with checks. Our 4th line won us a few games by forcing the other team to ice the puck because they were getting hammered in their defensive zone. Flyers throw the big guns out there while a tired line tries to hold them off. Of course, you don't understand what the F I'm talking about because you're clearly not a hockey fan.
- I agree with dave-tx about the Eminger trade. Versus was telecasting the draft and they showed Paul Holmgren approach Caps GM George McPhee for a trade. They showed the two of them shaking hands, Eminger for the Flyers pick, 27th overall. The Caps took defenseman John Carlson and that kid is tearing it up in Hershey this year. Eminger didn't last long with the Flyers and somewhere in the trade chain the Flyers ended up with Matt Carle. Eminger for a first round pick? What was Holmgren smoking? His judgement of player value leaves a lot to be desired.
- That is exactly what this team needs! ChrisM
