Lavvy gets tough; Emery surgery a success
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Partly as punishment for the nine penalties they committed Tuesday, new Flyers coach Peter Laviolette put his players through a tough practice Wednesday that included extra skating drills.
Laviolette said he wants the players to be accountable for their actions.
The Flyers, coming off a 6-2 win over the Islanders, host Ottawa Thursday.

Goalie Ray Emery had successful abdominal surgery Wednesday and is still expected to miss six weeks, GM Paul Holmgren said.
According to Holmgren, Dr. William Meyers repaired "a significant tear of his rectus abdominus on the left side of his lower stomach." The operation was performed at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Emery will be released later Wednesday and initiate his rehab Thursday, the GM said.
Brian Boucher (2.53 GAA, .903 save percentage) has become the Flyers' No. 1 goalie _ and said he is excited by the challenge.
Good for Laviolette. Someone is finally doing more than just talking about accountability. riles1875- The real test will be to see if Carcillo steps foot on the ice again when his suspension is over. How many times will he cost us before somebody in Flyer land wakes up? duffers
Bag skating? Awesome!!! Carcillo was excellent with exception of one game. He must be punished but he was very usefull player this year. Carcillo Betts and Lappy is one of the better 4th line in the NHL. Nitroglycerin

Didn't work when Hitchcock tried it. HandNik
Carcillo for Upshall and a 2nd round pick will go down as one of Holmgren's worst trades. Maybe the worst in Flyers history. Why do you need Asham, Cote, And Carcillo? snakeman
I disagree with the tough practice during this stretch. You just had back to back games, play Thurs and Saturday, and then Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday next week. Not a good time for a tough practice. That should have been done by Stevens before this tough stretch. dweb
Comment removed.- i think discipline and extra conditioning should do well for this team. that and BOOOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!! Inchon
I think trading a first for Eminger (and a third) was a worse trade than the Carcillo trade. Eminger flat-out stunk in the playoffs against the Flyers, and Holmgren trades for him? Yuck. dave-tx
Comment removed.- Love it!!!!! It's about time these players are made to work and get out of these bad habits. Keep on em, Lavvy. Briere still has to just take the hits and hope the refs call it. You should also be the initiator, not the one reacting and getting the penalty. The players have to learn to get their hits in within what the refs will allow. All retalitory actions will be called. Get them on the next shift with a good clean hit. NHLfan
Carcillo is useless. No one player energizes the opponents bench the way that dirty cheap shot artist does. He cost the Flyers game 6 last year with his dumb and useless fight, and his antics lead to a 9 minute PP against the Craps. Get rid of him. He's not a Laviolette kind of player anyway, so he should see plenty of time in the press box where he belongs as a healthy scratch. cnova000- just talking about it got Stevens fired potus
