Kings claim Jones; Parent paired with Timonen

POSTED: Thursday, October 29, 2009, 12:51 PM

The Flyers tried to push defenseman Randy Jones through re-entry waivers, but one of his former coaches wouldn’t let it happen.
Jones was claimed Thursday by the Los Angeles Kings, whose head coach, Terry Murray, was a Flyers assistant in charge of the defense when Jones was part of the team
The Kings and Flyers will share half of Jones' $2.75 million salary-cap hit _ $1.375 million apiece,

"He certainly would have helped us," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "That's the risk you take, and what are you going to do?"

Holmgren said he had talked to a few teams to gauge their interest in Jones. The Kings were obviously not one of them.

When Simon Gagne returns from the long-term injured list down the road, his cap hit ($5.25 million) will be absorbed again and the Flyers will probably have only about $700,000 in cap space _ unless they send one of their extra players to the AHL Phantoms.

Defenseman Ryan Parent, sidelined by a groin injury the last four games, is expected to return to action Saturday against Carolina and could be paired with Kimmo Timonen.
Timonen (minus-10) and Braydon Coburn (minus-9) have struggled as a duo, causing coach John Stevens to place Timonen and Parent together at Thursday's practice.

You sent him down and you had to sit on him for the year. Gave him away for nothing. At least the rangers didn't get him. Nice patience. This was just wrong. A top 5 defense man slighly overpaid. Was that you too.

Randy Jones sucks. Now he's the Kings problem. Good riddance.

do we get anything out of this, like a sandwich pick, or did we just blow 1.375 mil of cap space for absolutely nothing.

Not a big deal. The Flyers are stacked with young dmen. Burtulis, Marshall, Bourdon are waiting in the wings. Jones was a 7th-8th dman, and way overpaid. Plus Jones has chronic hip problems.

Randy Jones gone = good thing. Randy played himself down to the AHL by not performing to the level of his pay. Be it from injury or other,he was possibly the worst contract since Chris Gratton (money versus performance). Good for him that he gets another chance to play for an NHL team but if he was so good why was he not claimed on the way down. The answer to that is, he was overpaid and is only worth 1/2 of the money he is due. Bad move by Homer, I am sure that Randy would have cried all the way to the bank for having to play in the AHL for 2.75 mil a season....

I don't mind Jones being gone, but now we have 1.3M unavailable in cap space. I certainly hoped the team tried to trade him, but no one would want to take on all the salary if they could just wait and take half of it. I hope this doesn't hurt us later, like last year when they had to trade Upshall in order to keep Giroux on the roster. I must say I am not not liking Homer's GM work over the past year plus, pretty much starting with the Jones contract (then the trade for Emminger, etc.).

88 he did not get beat out, he was in the AHL strictly for monetary reasons. Do you think, he could not beat out Syvret?

There's no way Randy Jones could beat out Syvret, Johnny. Most of his passes wind up on the stick of the other team. Also, I guess LA is our new dumping ground for players who don't live up to expectations. Glad to see Jones gone, though I hate the cap hit. Now they just have to get rid of Cote and find a 4th line winger who can do anything.

Does LA pay Jones' entire salary, but only half counts against their cap? If so, Flyers save the cash. (I know they lose cap space.)
