First-year wingers James van Riemsdyk and Mika Pyorala, each of whom had impressive training camps, were on the 22-man roster the Flyers submitted to the NHL Wednesday afternoon.

    Center Blair Betts was not.

Betts, 29, is trying to make the team on a tryout contract. GM Paul Holmgren said he was still negotiating with Betts' agent, Steve Kotlowitz. Both sides appear to be at a stalemate.

Betts, whose agent did not return phone calls, made $615,000 with the Rangers last season. He has excelled on faceoffs and the penalty kill in the preseason.

The Flyers' youthful roster also includes defensemen Danny Syvret and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen. Syvret, 24, will start the season with Ryan Parent on the third defensive pairing.

The Flyers begin their season Friday in Carolina.

Faceoffs and penalty kill? Sounds like someone who could be pretty valuable to this team. Wasn't Richards run into the ground on the penalty kill last year?

Gosh, Betts is needed. Anything to reduce minutes from Carter on the PK. Carter needs to focus on scoring 5 on 5 and not be on the PK.

faceoffs was one of the team's biggest problems last year, why do you not sign this guy?

Emery off the team by Christmas? That's just a ridiculous statement to make. Ray Emery will be part of the solution, not the problem.

Also, just a matter of clarification... the season really doesn't begin until next week. You know, when the Flyers are broadcast on a real network, not this 2-bit TCN garbage.

They relaunched the high def comcast network again today due to the Flyers, I'd imagine. I'd like to see them sign Betts as well, but they have to make sure they're not in dire cap straits like last year.
