JVR to undergo surgery, miss 4-6 weeks

Left winger James van Riemsdyk will undergo surgery Tuesday on his left foot and miss four to six weeks, the Flyers announced.

The Flyers are hoping he will be ready to return for the playoffs.

Van Riemsdyk broke a bone while blocking a first-period shot fired by Islanders defenseman Milan Jurcina in the Flyers’ 6-3 win on Thursday.

Dr. Steven Raikin will insert a plate to help the healing process, according to GM Paul Holmgren.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, said he had felt as if he was close to getting back to form after missing 15 games with a concussion. Since his return, he had two assists and no goals in six games.

The blocked shot _ and van Riemsdyk trying to return a short time later _ inspired his teammates. The Flyers scored two first-period goals after the injury to erase an early 1-0 deficit.

“It gives a boost to the team,” goalie Ilya Bryzgalov said. “It says, 'Hey like this guy battles and we have to battle, too.' Then we get back to the game and we score two goals and continue to push the pace of the game to the highest tempo. Eventually, it pays off very well."

JVR has 11 goals in 43 games; he scored 21 goals last season.

Amen! I always say they were so bad that year they even lost the draft lottery.

Nutcracker - you can't possibly be saying that JVR is even CLOSE to Patrick Kane, can you?

This is just a lost season for JVR. Get well and comeback strong next year. The fact that so many teams are interested in trading for him shows his value in the eyes of league GM's, you morons who want to trash him no nothing about hockey.

In actuality...for all JVR's strengths and weaknesses...he will still be the prime pawn in Homer's annual blockbuster summer trade.

Really don't understand why they just didn't shut him down when the hip injury required surgery. They have a horrid record in dealing with players injuries. Maybe the criticisms are well deserved. I still think he will have an impact on the team when all is said and done with. Patience is a virtue but damn it sure is hard while you are going through it. Go Flyers!!!

NHL needs to contract and return some pre-lockout rules (allow some fighting). There's simply not enough quality talent and the league is now diluted with mediocrity and lack of any "sizzle".
