JVR making strides

POSTED: Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 11:47 AM

Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk appears to be making strides in his comeback from a concussion, but there are no plans for him to return to the lineup this week.

Sidelined for over a month, van Riemsdyk wore a regular jersey and spent time on the top line at Wednesday’s practice in Voorhees. He replaced the flu-riddled Jaromir Jagr on a line with Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell.

"It seemed like he had lots of pop, so hopefully he keeps moving in the right direction," center Danny Briere said.

After practice, van Riemsdyk said through a team spokesman that he felt "the same as last week," and that he would address the media in a few days.

Last week, van Riemsdyk said he sometimes felt he was in a fog because of the concussion.

“He looks good," Hartnell said. "I don’t know how he’s feeling or whatever. It’s tough to ask a guy with a head injury, ‘How you doing? How you doing? How you doing?’ He’s probably sick of those questions. But he’s skating well and looks strong on his skates and has pretty nice hands, so hopefully he’ll be able to be symptom-free for a while and have the confidence to get out there and get some hits and take some hits and get back in the game.”

Jagr, who turned 40 today, rested on Wednesday and the Flyers are hoping he can play Thursday against visiting Buffalo. He has one goal in his last 16 games.

JVR hasn’t played since Jan. 12 and has missed the last 14 games; he has 11 goals and 11 assists in 37 games.

Van Riemsdyk had been in a non-contact jersey on Tuesday.

Winger Jakub Voracek (upper-body injury) remained in a non-contact jersey on Wednesday.

Voracek said he was feeling a little better each day, and he did not rule out playing Thursday. He may be a game-time decision.

Great news! If he can return to th line up and score one goal every twelve games and contribute his typically inept and lazy back checking, he'll fit right in.

Surprise, already said he feels the same. This makes no sense, if a player has concussion symptoms he shouldnt be practicing nor be allowed to. Sit JVR out til he can actually play in a game let alone contribute. What a bust he has been, injury just makes it worse.

Seems to be rushing back, unless, as usual, we're not getting the entire story. I just hope he really is well before getting back into the lineup. Or, he comes back, plays a couple and ends up in Toronto...

JVR has talent and wish he was in the line up and contributing though. Hope he is fully recovered now and ready to go! Ilya needs to show up big from here on out too.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is in a fog until the trade deadline passes and then he'll feel just fine.

Trade JVR, Jakub and a first round pick for Rick Nash then go after Weber Or Suter, whichever one is available in free agency. No one is beating Detroit this season in a 4 game series.

I hate these audio commercials on this site. Anyway, I tend to agree with Frank's article yesterday which proposes that the Flyers become seller's at the deadline. Realistically, this team is not winning the cup this year with or without a big name deadline acquistion . if Bryz turns out to be a bust, hopefully the new CBA will afford teams with a one time amnesty clause and they can erase their mistake. Don't resign Jagr, maybe try to get what you can for Briere and please dump Carle . Pronger made him look much better than he really is. I would also try to get something for JVR for whatever reason, he is not living up to expectations

It's not about contending (pro-eid Eagles' fans), it's about winning the Cup...something the Flyers will not do this year. Rather than making a trade deadline panic move and get bounced in the first round, become a "seller"... dump Carle for someone young and/or picks; the guy is overrated and lost w/oPronger....and as much as I hate to admit it, if you can move Briere, do so. But keep ALL of the young talent, including JVR, and then reload with free agent D-men this offseason.

I agree with fman727 and jerzyte. JVR is afraid to get traded and will be in a fog until the trade deadline passes. Remember, this is the guy who wanted to go back to college for another year to have fun before the Flyers told him "uh...no, you're playing with us". He's a waste.

I agree with PhillyBurbs. Get rid of Carle. He sucks out loud.with the cap space from losing Carle and Pronger on LTIR get Weber (AS long as you don't have to gut the youth from this team). Losing Carle is addition by subtraction.

A lot of you guys, you know who you are, were ready to trade Brayden Schenn for a box of kleenex after his first 5 games with the Flyers. The team needs a steady hand at the wheel.
Some of you guys amaze me how you can make it out of the driveway each morning. And get your own kleenex.

I agree with LaCroix,Nolet,Gendron. I been saying the last few yrs to get a new goalie coach. When Bob first came to the Flyers. He was amazing. After a few months with us. He wasn't as impressive

Do not give up on JVR.Look at the layers around the league who are now star who the Flyers gave up on.Patrick Sharp in the one who comes to mind most often.

Moving Briere would be a mistake, the guy is money in the playoffs and thats priceless. I agree, move Carle and Cobourn. I would leave the forwards alone for the most part. e have no trouble on offence as long as they are not worried about the next bad goal or stupid give-away by the defence.

Coburn also has been looking lost on defense. The defense is just crumbling. It may not be the defense fault though, if they start to feel like they can't allow any shots because of weak goaltending they tend to play differently and worry to much about making any mistakes.
