Hartnell signs extension
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Flyers winger Scott Hartnell signed a six-year extension today, the club announced.
Hartnell, 30, is coming off a season in which he scored a career-high 37 goals.
Terms were not released, but the 11-year veteran reportedly will have a cap hit of $4.75 million per season.
"I give Jaromir Jagr a lot of credit for my success last year in terms of focus on the game," Hartnell said. "I'm going to try to carry that over."
Hartnell, who led the Flyers with a plus-19 rating last season, added he didn't feel it would be difficult to find chemistry with Jake Voracek, the right winger who is expected to replace Jagr on a line with Hartnell and Claude Giroux.
Jagr signed with Dallas earlier this summer.
"I think Jake got stronger as year went on and had a great playoffs. He plays with a lot of heart," Hartnell said in a conference call with reporters. "It gives us another left-handed shot on right side like Jags, and I don't think it'll be too hard to find chemistry."
Hartnell said Giroux was "all smiles" when he told him he had signed an extension.
As for the negotiations between the players and the league, Hartnell said you "still have to have faith" that the season will start on time, but he added that the players "aren't anywhere close to accepting that deal," which includes a 24% rollback in salaries.
Last week, winger Wayne Simmonds, who turns 24 on Sunday, signed a six-year deal for $23.8 million. Hartnell's contract is for $28.5 million.
The NHL is trying to limit contracts to five years in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

A cap hit under $5 is a good deal for a top line winger. I expect Scotty to continue to develop into a veteran leader in his later years, if not quite put up 37 goals a season. sla6yer
Thats a decent number with the standard inflation of the league. Look what role players like Leino got in the past few years, this beats that and the number may go down with the CBA. Sidewinder7
Sweet...and it's Voracek that is moving to the top line. Why did I think it was Schenn?
Anywho, Good signing! Hugs all around! Reality Speaks
Hartnell Down! Ohmy
I think this past season will be his best statistical season we get to see. But if he keeps playing with Giroux he should still put up 25 -30 goals per year. mikeyhigs- Homer needs to keep his eye open for some mid to late season additions. I can see the Blue Line needing some beef by February.
- How old is he? drunk13
Read the article and lay off the sauce. Bobby Danger
Good guy works hard and always give 100% effort. Would have preferred a 4 year deal vs a 6 but who knows if that would have gotten it done...He is 30 drunk13. I am a little surprised they made the move this early but they are trying to manage the CBA unknowns. Agree with others not a 37 goal scorer but a solid 20-25 goal man who protects his teamates flyers1000
Horrible signing.....The guy simply doesn't show up in the playoffs. Here is a stat for you, Hartnell has more penalty minutes in the playoffs then shots on goal. Name me another "goal-scorer" who has a stat like that in the history of the game. This will be an albatross contact in another year. LLCane- Rick Tocchet has 471 playoff PIM and 366 shots on goal on his playoff stat sheet. Want one more current? Milan Lucic of the Bruins 124 shots vs 137 PIM. There's two pretty solid goal scorers.
Hartnell's playoff point per game totals are almost identical to Simon Gagne. Hardly a disappearing act JSaq
I'm not the biggest Homer fan but he's doing all the right things this offseason. I just wish we could have landed Weber. Oh well...good locking up Harts if he can continue putting up points and being a good agitator. Fans of other teams hate him so he's obviously doing something right. Fly Guy
LL Cane - Here's a stat for you: 5 goals in the Cup finals (6 games) - I'm sure there are plenty of "goal-scorers" who never did that. shadesofdeath
