Giroux playing Wed. in Dallas?

POSTED: Tuesday, December 20, 2011, 3:41 PM

DALLAS _ Claude Giroux didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to the lineup Wednesday night in Dallas.

The Flyers’ star center had been sidelined with a concussion since Dec. 10 and has missed the last four games.

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s practice at the American Airlines Arena, Giroux said he didn’t have any problems, and that “if it keeps feeling better and better,” he would probably be in the lineup “pretty soon.”

As soon as Wednesday against the Dallas Stars?

   “Maybe,” he said.

Giroux, 23, had contact for the first time since he returned to practice on Sunday. He battled defenseman Braydon Coburn at one point. “I went in the corners with Coby and told him to hit me a little bit,” he said with a smile.

GM Paul Holmgren said Giroux has been cleared to play, and that he is officially listed as "day to day."

Why does it seem too soon to have him come back? I don't see why he'd be in the line up before the Winter Classic at the earliest. Yes, they have lost a few, but better to be safe and have him ready for the end of the season than to lose him like the Penguins have lost Crosby.

Contact is a big test. Now we just have to wait to see how he feels in the morning.

Hopefully the Flyers management is not rushing things. I agree with the above post that they should not take any unnecessary risks at this stage even if they leak some points. In 2008, though, he recovered very quickly from his first concussion and the problems never reoccurred. That's a good sign I'd say as a layman.

The FLYERS need to make sure he is 100% healthy before they let him play in any game no matter how much the team miss him play. We all need to beworried that GIroux willtry to come back too soon like Pronger did and to have a normal hit knock him out for the rest of the season or longer. As fanswe need to let Giroux knowwe want him to do what isbest for him and to be 100% ready to return. I think if he is ready than wait till the Classic that will give him more time just in case... I would rather be safe than sorry

Not sure holding Crosby out 11 months was "rushing" him back in...it does seem to soon to get him back in there, but every concussion is different.

Giroux had no business diving after that player when he got kneed in the head.

He's got a long career ahead of him he has to play smarter than that. Whenever he comes back, he ought to learn a lesson from Briere about how to approach the regular season. Briere puts up consistent but not spectacular numbers during the regular season and throws himself around during the playoffs. We may need a bit more defense out of Giroux but the more he saves for the playoffs the better.

Honestly, 3 days of feeling good doesn't seem like enough to me. The Flyers should be waiting until at least the New Year before bringing him back. There's no use in putting him out there after a few good days, only to find out that he wasn't completely healed when the next big hit knocks him out for a year.

Sorry to all the naysayers and worriers, but I am thrilled he is close to returning. I fully grasp that new studies on brain injuries exist, and am not advocating players risk their lives or future health for my amusement, BUT... Not EVERY conk on the head is a concussion , nor does every concussion result in permanent damage.
The argument against my view is "Many injuries years ago may have been undiagnosed concussion and put players at further risk.", and to that I agree. But that further makes my point. What percentage of former athletes are now riddled with permanent brain damage? I get that anything above zero is too much, but again my point is- it's not 100% either. Err on the side of caution but don't try to make everyone live endlessly in a bubble either. If he passes all tests physical and mental- FACE OFF!

Not enough time......a third concussion and you are going to put the longevity of his career at risk. A 23 year old does not get to make decisions like this. That should be left to a 50 year old professional.

Northcountry you really think Giroux is deciding when he is going back? The team doctor is going by the book, maybe he gets hurt again, maybe he doesn't but teams are going to follow the rules with all the focus on concussions of late. The NHL has guidelines that have to be followed and the Flyer's are, the Flyers won't try to rush him back, they are near the top of a league that is painfully easy to make the playoffs. There is no urgency for them, he will go when he is ready not when commenting wanna be doctors think he should.

Does he have to be 50 exactly? What about 45? And if Giroux was 25, would the doctor have to be 52? Or would 47 do?

If he is symptom free then let him play. Concussions are unpredictable. Crosby sat out 11 months and was concussed a few weeks later. Some players have one concussion and never have another one.

Has Bill Conlin ever been around Giroux? He's young. I worry...

Sidewinder7, I think you are underestimating the pressure in the NHL. It is not as easy to make the playoffs as it used to be in the old days. 8 out of 15 teams make it, which is slightly above the .500 mark. Plus, there is a salary cap and consequently the teams are much closer in terms of overall talent and ability. Only two seasons ago, the Flyers were only able to qualify in game #82, have you already forgotten that? There definitely is a danger of the Flyers pushing G back on the ice prematurely.
