Giroux bypassed in MVP voting

Another day, another Flyer bypassed in the voting for an NHL award.
Center Claude Giroux was the latest Flyer to be overlooked. He was not one of the three finalists for the Hart Trophy, given to the league’s MVP.
After pretending he didn’t know what the Hart Trophy represented, Giroux said. “At the end of the day that's not the trophy I want.”
The finalists: Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos and the Rangers Henrik Lundqvist.
The voting was conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
In other earlier votes that narrowed it down to three finalists, Matt Read (Calder), Jaromir Jagr (Masterton) and Paul Holmgren (GM of Year) were bypassed.

The Flyers, to a man, expect a much lower-scoring series against New Jersey than the one with Pittsburgh. The series starts Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center at 3 p.m.
“Against a team like the Devils, you have to be very patient,” Danny Briere said after Friday’s practice in Voorhees. “They’re a team that likes to slow the game down. They don’t take many chances; they play very tight defensively. And they like to frustrate teams, so for us, one of the keys is not getting frustrated, waiting patiently for our chances to come.”
The Devils, who won a grueling 3-2 double-overtime decision in Florida on Thursday, were given Friday off.

F the trophy G and get the Cup. Best Revenge against clearly anti-Flyers NHL front office. Let's Go Flyers! IdahoMoose
The three players chosen for the Hart Trophy obviously are great. Yet how can Stammer be the MVP when playing on a losing team such as Tampa? Is it enough for this trophy to make a bottom dweller a mediocre team? My idea of this award is that it rewards players on winning teams for making an essential contribution to, eh, winning.... Just saying... flyerdommo
If I am starting a team....I am taking Giroux before those others. rockinrob
I don't see what's so hard about doing what the rest of the award-voting world does: hold an open vote without any sort of "primary" that reduces the field to three candidates. Then again, I have a hard time caring too much about NHL awards. sklandog
The NHL individual honors have been a joke for decades. They created teh Jennings for the lowest GAA so they had the Vezina for "BEST" goalie, yet still have goalies in MVP. They have the Art Ross for most points, yet constantly stack the MVP finals with high scorers, not necessarily Most IMPORTANT. They have the Selke for defensive forward, but nothing for defensive DEFENSEMAN and always give the NORRIS to a scorer.
The voters say G is not MVP? FINE. They also say Homer is not TOP GM? FINE. We have 100+ pt season losing our captain and top defenseman for the entire year- that MUST mean Coach of the year, right? Probably-NOPE.
ALL FINE WITH ME. They don't have a PARADES for ANY of those trophies. I'll see all you guys on Broad Street in June!!!
LET'S GO FLYERS! GNIKGNARLY
This will be just another incentive for G to smoke Henrik when we meet the Rangers. Also confirms my belief that the Flyboys are blackballed for beating up on Poster Boy and whiners. The writers, announcers, and the league showing their true colors. Give them something to write about boys!! dogman5
Good - let Stamkos have the MVP...
But let Giroux hoist the CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!! bigdaddyG
Remember when Hartnell was snubbed for the All Star Game. He went on to have the best week of his career. Let's see if Giroux can match that. WestCoastFlyerFan- it will all be ok if he gets the con smythe in june
The truth is people just don't like Philly teams, especially the Flyers. ChrisM
Every perceived or real insult as each awards finalist are listed is ok with me. Let that chip on the Flyers shoulder grow into a fuggin mountain. Sports Assoc. don't like Philly period, neither do most of the outside media. Keep it that way it's healthy to carry a bit of anger in your game. Winning it all will just be sweeter (KNOCK KNOCK) glove69
Can't wait to see Bettman present the Flyers with the Cup. And he had damned sure better be smiling when he does it, too!! Let's go Flyers! doug1834
Gotta love "G's" mentality. "...that's not the trophy I want." The individual honors will come (for him). He wants the Cup...as we do. That's what matters. And if all goes well, the league will have no choice but to present it to the Flyers, whether they like it or not! That's what I want to see. doug1834- -Somewhere far far away in a parallel "Bizzaro Universe"
"If the NHL knew what was good for em', I'd be the Hart Trophy winner. Not only can I bring honor back to the NHL but a new precedence will be set. While you're at it, polish the Conn Smythe for me and start engraving my name on the Cup."
Gotta love "G's" mentality. Jiggs700
Lundqvist is hard to argue against. That NY Ranger team is downright mediocre without him. Hopefully Giroux gets the Conn Smythe and the Flyers get the Cup. PhillyfaninChicago
snubbed?!?! give me a break Old German- Old German,
Robbed sounds better, right?!?!
Jiggs700
Its a Canadian thing! They are anti-Education??? quigly46
If the Flyers can go all the way and win the cup, I can see Bettman snubbing them and declaring the West team the winner anyway. C-Note
Nothing surprising here. The Flyers always get snubbed. Lavy and now G. Nothing new. mbrown3
What is with all of the whining...the eague is against us we get no awards..the refs are against us we get no calls....its because of the Broad Street bullies ( who played almost 40 yrs ago and most league officials who saw them are dead). Give it a rest folks...should BRYZ be in the top 3 for Vezina also????? flyers1000
Keep watching Lundquist....He's the best there is. jcpaul
Blacknight My thought exactly! Giroux looking for bigger fish (cups)!!! jjmac777
Ya it funny but don't see stamkos or malkin in the playoffs so if one of them wins it it means nothing unless you got a Stanley cup to go with it.G is waiting for mvp of playoffs to go with the Flyers Stanley cup.
Gullysflyers
michael_19030 ~ There is a salary cap, all the teams have restrictions on what they can spend. And don't tell New York can't spend money...they just signed Brad Richards in the off season...he ain't playing in New York for the Theatre District.... also Tampa Bay missed the playoff, how were they still successful?? flyers2009
1. Lundqvist is a finalist for the Vezina, should not be a finalist for the Hart as well.
2. Let's see, Read snubbed for Calder; Holmgren snubbed for GM of the Year; Timonen snubbed for Norris, again; Lavy snubbed for Coach of the Year.
More fuel to bring home the only piece of hardware that really matters! AnukKrakatoa
Conn Smythe and Cup for Giroux... Bettman will hate congratulating the Flyers and not the Pens. fman727
I don't agree Holgrem got snubbed - he took some risks and gambled and they paid off but lets face it the Flyers and Rangers are the cream of the crop when it comes to the amount of money the GM's have to play with. The three that are finalists come from teams with restrictions on how much money they can spend on their payroll and they were still successful. The Billy Beanes of the NHL so to speak... michael2_19030
agreed with blacknight - take those three off their teams and the shite would hit the fan (ok - Tamps still sucked WITH Stamkos but the guy led the league in goals scored!).
Take Giroux off the Flyers and they still make the playoffs and survive without him - they have enough depth. Maybe not win a SC but keep their heads above water during the regular season. michael2_19030
Comment removed.
I love G and think he's the most complete forward in the league, but it's hard to argue with guys who score 50 & 60 goals in a season. Lundqvist should probably win, as the Rangers would go nowhere without him, but I would put my money on Malkin. I think Read/Couturier and Holmgren both got snubbed way worse than G did. MJFur51
I'll call it like I see it, but this wasn't a snub at all. Giroux simply did not have the numbers these 3 guys put up in the regular season. As much as I hate to admit it my guess is Malkin at this point - in the absence of Crosby, he carried the Pens on his back all season long. CTL
More fuel for G's fire. I'll trade a Hart Trophy for a Stanley Cup. And we can rename the city Girouxsalem in his honor. Can't wait to get this thing started up again... Doctor D
Should have been in before Stamkos and Lundqvist. Any good goalie is the mvp of his team in this sport, the best of those gets the Vezna. Sidewinder7
It all depends on what you define MVP as. From an individual accomplishment stand-point, I can't justifiably list G above those three. So it's all good. He'll have plenty of time for personal achievements down the road. Let's get the team one first. toph314
Conn Smythe usually means you won Cup (except for Flyers -- Leach in 76, Hextall in 87) so he hopes to win that one warbiscuit
Think the NHL doesn't carry a 40 year grudge? The Broad Street Bullies are a distant memory but this team is paying the price for the animosity held over for years. Get used to it. J Bird- i'm not a homer and disagree that stamkos and malkin had better years simply based on the fact that giroux lead a team with 6 rookies and a shaky goalie to a 100+ point season and that he is a much better defensive player than both of them. on the top PK unit. if he wins the conn smythe, it won't matter.
- Tampa was in the Conference Finals last year, what exactly did Stamkos do this year to improve that team? They went backwards. But in the end it doesn't matter. We win the Cup, no one cares pbuscio
But I do agree with everyone else - none of these trophies mean a damn thing. There's only one that does... dennis27
@Mark1npt - Exactly. How can you be the most valuable player in the league when your offensive achievements didn't actually help your team accomplish anything? It might be different if Tampa made a big turnaround this year from cellar-dweller to making a surprising push to almost get in the playoffs. Then I might be able to see including Stamkos. But this team made it to the conference finals last year. And in the worst division in hockey, they never really came close to making the playoffs this year. I don't care what kind of numbers he put up, that eliminates him from the conversation for me. dennis27
There's only one trophy that really matters. Win that and no one will care who won the Calder, the Hart, the Masterton or the Con Smythe. Al Wilson
Given the fact that they don't take the playoffs into consideration , accounts partly for Giroux not being in the top 3 ... 60 goals is impressive and i think that's what caught everyone's attention . And Giroux is Right , that's NOT the Trophy we want ! ingy9
I like and respect Stamkos, but.....Players on a crappy team like the Lightning shouldn't be eligible. You have to have been important and vital to your team to be league MVP. Where would the Lightning have finished without Stamkos? Still at the bottom....Where would the Flyers or Rangers have finished without Giroux or Lundqvist? Exactly. They were far more valuable. Give Stamkos a goal scoring trophy, but NOT a league MVP trophy. I hope the Flyers organization to a man is using these snubs as fuel to the fire. Mark1npt
Use it as fuel, absolutely. Grazman- You know what else you can use for fuel? Penguin blubber.
Jiggs700
G's day will come the way he is playing. I personally like seeing every Flyer getting screwed in this, it'll give them a little something more to prove, maybe. That us against the world thing. Nothing hokey about it when it works. PhillySubsMac
With all due respect to Grioux (who I think is the best all around player in the league), it is tough to argue with those 3. blackknight
