Giroux bypassed in MVP voting
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff Writer
Another day, another Flyer bypassed in the voting for an NHL award.
Center Claude Giroux was the latest Flyer to be overlooked. He was not one of the three finalists for the Hart Trophy, given to the league’s MVP.
After pretending he didn’t know what the Hart Trophy represented, Giroux said. “At the end of the day that's not the trophy I want.”
The finalists: Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos and the Rangers Henrik Lundqvist.
The voting was conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
In other earlier votes that narrowed it down to three finalists, Matt Read (Calder), Jaromir Jagr (Masterton) and Paul Holmgren (GM of Year) were bypassed.

The Flyers, to a man, expect a much lower-scoring series against New Jersey than the one with Pittsburgh. The series starts Sunday at the Wells Fargo Center at 3 p.m.
“Against a team like the Devils, you have to be very patient,” Danny Briere said after Friday’s practice in Voorhees. “They’re a team that likes to slow the game down. They don’t take many chances; they play very tight defensively. And they like to frustrate teams, so for us, one of the keys is not getting frustrated, waiting patiently for our chances to come.”
The Devils, who won a grueling 3-2 double-overtime decision in Florida on Thursday, were given Friday off.

With all due respect to Grioux (who I think is the best all around player in the league), it is tough to argue with those 3. blackknight
G's day will come the way he is playing. I personally like seeing every Flyer getting screwed in this, it'll give them a little something more to prove, maybe. That us against the world thing. Nothing hokey about it when it works. PhillySubsMac
Use it as fuel, absolutely. Grazman- You know what else you can use for fuel? Penguin blubber.

I like and respect Stamkos, but.....Players on a crappy team like the Lightning shouldn't be eligible. You have to have been important and vital to your team to be league MVP. Where would the Lightning have finished without Stamkos? Still at the bottom....Where would the Flyers or Rangers have finished without Giroux or Lundqvist? Exactly. They were far more valuable. Give Stamkos a goal scoring trophy, but NOT a league MVP trophy. I hope the Flyers organization to a man is using these snubs as fuel to the fire. Mark1npt
Given the fact that they don't take the playoffs into consideration , accounts partly for Giroux not being in the top 3 ... 60 goals is impressive and i think that's what caught everyone's attention . And Giroux is Right , that's NOT the Trophy we want ! ingy9
There's only one trophy that really matters. Win that and no one will care who won the Calder, the Hart, the Masterton or the Con Smythe. Al Wilson
@Mark1npt - Exactly. How can you be the most valuable player in the league when your offensive achievements didn't actually help your team accomplish anything? It might be different if Tampa made a big turnaround this year from cellar-dweller to making a surprising push to almost get in the playoffs. Then I might be able to see including Stamkos. But this team made it to the conference finals last year. And in the worst division in hockey, they never really came close to making the playoffs this year. I don't care what kind of numbers he put up, that eliminates him from the conversation for me. dennis27
But I do agree with everyone else - none of these trophies mean a damn thing. There's only one that does... dennis27- Tampa was in the Conference Finals last year, what exactly did Stamkos do this year to improve that team? They went backwards. But in the end it doesn't matter. We win the Cup, no one cares pbuscio
- i'm not a homer and disagree that stamkos and malkin had better years simply based on the fact that giroux lead a team with 6 rookies and a shaky goalie to a 100+ point season and that he is a much better defensive player than both of them. on the top PK unit. if he wins the conn smythe, it won't matter.
Think the NHL doesn't carry a 40 year grudge? The Broad Street Bullies are a distant memory but this team is paying the price for the animosity held over for years. Get used to it. J Bird
Conn Smythe usually means you won Cup (except for Flyers -- Leach in 76, Hextall in 87) so he hopes to win that one warbiscuit
It all depends on what you define MVP as. From an individual accomplishment stand-point, I can't justifiably list G above those three. So it's all good. He'll have plenty of time for personal achievements down the road. Let's get the team one first. toph314
Should have been in before Stamkos and Lundqvist. Any good goalie is the mvp of his team in this sport, the best of those gets the Vezna. Sidewinder7
